While Jewish people are only about 2% of the population, they have had an outsize impact on our society, economy and business leadership. With this in mind I am surprised that Bernie is the first real strong candidate for the Presidency who is Jewish. Why?

For somewhat the same reasons that divorced men weren't considered as Presidential candidates -- until the rise of Nelson Rockefeller and Ronald Reagan. People under the age of, roughly 50, don't remember how strong an issue religious and similar doctrines were at the time.

There was for VP with Joe Lieberman in 2000.

Wiki says he was the first Jewish candidate on a major political ticket.
