Interesting article. While I am supporting Obama, as a Republican I am impressed with Mitt Romney's credentials and conservative positions. Of all the candidates running, he was probably the most qualified and experienced to run a government. I believe the only reason he lost the Republican nomination is because he is a Mormon. If he were a southern Baptist, he would have been the nominee hands down. This is a sad testament to the Republican party's deterioration after years of having been corrupted by the influx of southern evangelical wingnuts into the party.
The article correctly notes the fact that Mormons will vote (and have voted) for southern evangelical Republican politicians, but southern evangelicals do not return the favor when a Mormon Republican is the one running for office. This is the kind of religious bigotry that is now pervasive in the Republican party. This Republican party needs to be taught a lesson. It needs to be defeated in November.
i would agree with most of the previous statement, except that the democratic party has clearly gotten more left wing with these 2 candidates and that probably would not be good for america either. do we really want more government? obama refused to cut welfare, supported the DREAM act, wants illegals to have driver licenses, missed 38.8% of the votes this year, and has a liberal voting record. hillary wants mandated national health care. mccain wants more military spending, even though he refuses to close the borders. somebody's positions are going to have to change to get us headed in the right direction. i absolutely refuse to decide who to vote for in the general election until i know more about their final platforms, because they all need to be backpedaling on these issues.

Kev, I got a Mormon church across the street from my house. Black folks were always allowed to be Mormons but could not be married in the temple or be part of church leadership until 1978. You want me to tell you when the Jesuits had their first black seminarian? They also had a rule against black applicants.
And, if you get technical, Jeffords was not a member of the Church of Latter Day Saints.
African Americans could not be priests or participate in temple rites necessary for the highest degree of salvation until the discrimation was struck down in 1978. The church currently opposes any form of discrimination or racism except against women who are not allowed to be priests. This is highly misinformed and totally incorrect. First of all, that person is not "the" Mormon Leader, but the leader of a small splinter group that is not part of the official Mormon Church.
