I use to live in Miami and there were quite a few people there who could only speak Spanish - they could basically not speak English at all (My Grandmother was an Immigrant from Germany, and when she came to America she couldn't speak English either - it took awhile, and night Classes in English before she could really speak English fluently - it didn't mean she didn't love and respect the United States - she did, but it can sometimes take years for immigrants to get to where they are fluent in English, sometimes it takes to the second generation - I see no reason why someone should be fired because you are offended by the fact that they aren't able to speak the same language as yourself. America has no national language, whether you like that fact or not. And yes your attitude is rather small minded and xenophobic...But typical, unfortunately.
Still repeating the same ole leftist lies about Trump? The person you replied to said it was a workplace problem and she described why. I also gave an example where a Spanish speaker decided she didn't like the rules of the company about not speaking a foreign language while on the clock so she ripped the memo off the board. Where's the hate and xenophobia by pointing those things out? You might want to tone down your hateful comments yourself before calling others haters in here. And yes, English is our national de facto language even congress declared it so years ago. Don't confuse that with the word "official" as I never said it was.
Oh, please! Trump has never said "Make America Hate Again" --- and you know it. Yet you go and accuse people of being bigots, when it is you in fact, who is the bigot. And then you invoke Godwin's Law. You lose. Big time.
It is rude when someone on a work site is speaking another language other than English and not everybody can speak that language. In fact, I gave you a good example as to how speaking another language should not be allowed on the work site. Yet, you made excuses for those workers, when what they did was inexcusable. It's despicable that you find it okay that they were talking like that in earshot of customers---and their supervisor.
What you don't get is this --- English is the language that binds us all.
Now, I'm done talking to you and dealing with your hatefulness.
It is not hateful at all, if someone is speaking Spanish or any other language, because they can't speak English. It's ridiculous on your part to be offended because someone else has not yet learned to speak in your language. Only someone really super paranoid, or someone with some real "control issues" would freak about that.
The point made is that suppressing language use by a community is generally counterproductive in the long run and leads to divisiveness - as you've well documented in Spain (lot of separatist sentiment in areas such as Catalan and Basque).
Maybe in Europe or even in Canada: not the US since MOST "Hispanic" people who've been here for 3 generation or more DON'T even speak Spanish and; a LOT of that kind of Latino looks DOWN on even illegal aliens from LatAm.
Too; I didn't know this till a a few months back, in Gibraltar, looking at their official website, it's in English ONLY even tho in the US a LOT of Gibraltar people WOULD be tagged as "Hispanic". But most of their kind would claim "English" as their ethnicity, not any kind of Latino.

Reason: Left out a word

You could have posted what you did without putting up such vile items about Trump. Yes, he did say that some Mexican illegals are "rapists" and "murderers". However, you know darn well that he didn't say all were that way. I don't know why anyone would be bothered about this, as it is the truth.
What you don't get is this --- If people want to speak another language amongst themselves, when they're not at work, no one cares.
If someone takes a job where one is dealing with the public, one needs to speak the common language. In the US, that language is English. If they can't properly communicate in English, then take a job where there is no dealing with the public.
I didn't get anyone fired. However, I will not put up with someone speaking as vilely as those 3 kitchen workers were doing. And if I am dealing with a worker who can't properly communicate in English to the point where said worker can't understand even basic English, I will let management know about it.
When I lived in a Spanish speaking place, I never would have applied for a job that required me to speak Spanish with customers because I knew darn well that I wasn't fluent enough to do so. It's common sense.
My attitude is not "small minded and xenophobic". Do you even know what "xenophobic" means? If you knew anything about me, you would realize just how foolish you were by making that accusation.
Thank you! You will notice that I didn't call anyone here "small minded", but just a behavior.
But you are not giving an example of Spanish hurting anyone. These men could be talking "argot" . The error is in denigrating women.
Why is it rude? What if the customer is struggling to say what he wants since English is his second language and the clerk also speaks English as a second language? What if they share a joke? Should they be punished because someone overhears them and thinks they are laughing at them.
The brain processes your first language different than your second language. It doesn't matter how fluent you are!
That's a lot of anger caused by simply overhearing a language. I assume you know about "code switching". When a person speaks two languages fluently, their mind tends to reach for the word that most clearly expresses what you want to say. The word comes out of their mouth, but sometimes mixed in with the other language. An English speaker may say "of course" while a Spanish speaker may say "Claro".
Do you get angry if you hear Cajun speakers?
Anger? Expressing my opinion is anger? What's next the hater, bigoted by words? I have never heard any Cajun speakers where I live just Spanish all the time. Why not speak English instead if you know it? The more you use it the more fluent you become in it. I get the impression that they resent having to speak English.

What part of in many or most cases they do know how to speak English but refuse to didn't you get?

Oh, please!
Expecting someone who is on the job to speak English while at work and within earshot of customers is not "super paranoid" nor does it mean that a person has "some real control issues". Nor is it somehow "super paranoid" to expect those who deal with the public to be able to speak fluent English.
Why you keep repeating the same misinformation is beyond me. However---once again---what offended me about those 3 kitchen workers was their use of a Spanish word that denigrated women and laughed every time they looked at the cashier. I'm really surprised that you would find such language being used towards a woman---especially one who didn't speak Spanish and therefore, couldn't even defend herself---even remotely acceptable.
Now, what I'm about to tell you just might make your head explode --- Spanish is my father's first language. He really dislikes calling a business and hearing "para Espanol, oprime dos". He refuses to "oprime dos" because, in his words, that has no place in our society.

Believe all you want, but the vast majority of Latinos aren't going to vote for Trump. Heck, Romney got about 27% of them, given Trump's rudeness towards Latinos, he is highly unlikely to get more than that.
Well, Gibraltar is basically a British colony. What did you expect? Only about 27% are of Spanish origin.
What you didn't say is that most Gibraltar residents are bilingual in English and Spanish. English is used in more formal and official contexts, but Spanish is the main vernacular language in informal contexts. Other languages are also spoken, such as Portuguese and Arabic (since it's adjacent to Morocco).
Not unlike a lot of Latino families here in the US.
What part of in many or most cases they do know how to speak English but refuse to didn't you get?
But, like I said I have known, and worked with many Spanish speaking immigrants who didn't know English - so they can't speak the language that they hadn't yet had time to learn. I find it odd that people are so intolerant and bent out of shape because of someone else speaking in their tongue to one another - but maybe that's just me.
