Trump won't release tax returns because he is going through an "audit"? (financial, money)

Donald Trump thought they mattered--back in 2012. Why did he think it was so important and relevant that Romney release his taxes but it's not important or relevant that he release his own?

Exactly what relevance do thoughts from years ago have today?
As a certain female once famously said: "What difference does it make?"
I don't care what trump thought in 2012. Times, things, and attitudes change.
Yes, indeed, "What difference does it make?" Quite possibly one of the smartest things that ol' broad ever said!
Ask the IRS, because they can look at multiple years. Deductions, and write offs span over a number of returns.
You can't ask the IRS if someone else is under audit as that is private. If you read the link he has been asked by reporters to at least make public the letters from the IRS that state what years he is under audit. He has failed to do so.

Oh, yeah, attitudes change. As in, when it was Romney's taxes Trump thought it was important. Now that it's his taxes, they are suddenly not important.
What could have possibly changed in his thinking about the importance of tax returns from the last presidential election to this one? Well, except that at that time he had nothing to worry about because no one was looking at his. Now, it's quite obvious, he's hiding something. There can be no other reason for his sudden reversal.

This has been reported both here and elsewhere in media. Donald Trump's finances are a mystery to even those that he does business. The man boasts being worth *billions* but those claims have never actually been substantiated by outside sources. A number of persons who study such things are of the opinion Mr. Trump's net worth is far lower than he brags.
Major US and world banks largely shun Donald Trump. Deutsche Bank for reasons known only to themselves are really the only place that willingly deals with the man.
Releasing his tax returns would give banks, Wall Street and others detailed information they may otherwise never get to see. If the figures are incorrect Mr. Trump could be in a world of trouble from the IRS. If he used/submitted false information to obtain financing trouble could come from other sources.
