Trump's mistake was engaging this family at all. He should have referred to them as the prop they are and then focused fire on Hillary. He get's too distracted by all the political sideshows.
GQ ‘Journalist’ on Pat Smith: ‘I would like to beat her to death’
The speech by one of Hillary Clinton’s Benghazi victims ruined the night for Chris Matthews, but it really hit home for this tool.
Last night, when Pat Smith was speaking onstage at the Republication National Convention, I tweeted that “no matter how many children she’s lost, I’d like to beat her to death.” That’s what I said, and I accept full responsibility for my actions and their consequences.

It was a controversial mis-step by Donald Trump.
The Republicans in this thread say that the Democrats used the speech to bait Donald and Donald foolishly took the bait. They are hoping statements by Pence and others will lessen the impact of the controversy.
The Democrats here say this exposes Donald's hypocrisy, his prejudice and his poor decision making skills. They point to the Veterans of Foreign Wars organization that has chastised Donald.
Anyway ... in the end Donald is walking away from this episode with a black eye.
A candidate for president has to run a near perfect campaign. Any mis-step can cost him or her 1% or 2% or 3% which could flip a state that is nearly evenly divided.
Gold Star families deserve our respect, and Trump has said as much. But Mr. Khan launched an attack on Mr. Trump. Being a Gold Star family doesn't mean you get to attack people with endless impunity.
As to your last sentence, have you said the same regarding the mother of the Benghazi soldier who attacked Hillary Clinton at the RNC ?
BTW, Trump's treatment of Mr. & Mrs. Khan contradicts his general statement. First says he respects them, then in the next few sentences disrespects them. Donald wants to have it both ways. Not many people are fooled by it at all frankly. I am proud of many Americans in both parties and independents; and also the VFW, for criticizing Donald Trump. We are better than that as Americans. Trump has yet to get a clue. Don't think he has apologized for his various disrespectful/hateful remarks once during the campaign and he is finally paying the price.
He is trailing by 9% and won't be surprised if that is in double digits by the end of the week.
Agree to disagree.

Stating she didn't speak isn't an attack. It's a fact.
He just didnt say she didn't speak, he speculated she wasn't allowed to speak...
