Mr. Obama in a speech tonight at the Houston Toyota Center announced an amazing policy inititive:

A $4,000 a year scolarship paid every year of school by the U.S. Government, to be paid back by doing community service. Essentially having students pay back the government by helping out in their communities.

What an ingenious and optomistic fresh inititive. Wow

This ranks equal or even higher then the Peace Corps..

No wonder the kennedy's support him - this man has it!

Obama '08!

Err...he has actually been talking about this for at least a few weeks, and I believe actually a couple of months. I actually heard him say it in person prior to the Potomac Primaries.

It's just that it's been lost in the din of nay-sayers who criticize him for not having any policies. The loud criticism drowned out what they said wasn't actually there.

But I definitely like the policy. I think civil service should be mandatory, like it is in many European countries. That service can be a very short term of military enlistment, working as a hospital orderly, helping out at a homeless shelter, etc. I really liked the way Germany had things, except I thought it was BS that the format made it mandatory for males to serve in the military or take a longer stint in civil service. Females should have the same set of obligations as males.

Anyway, I would like all the different civil service positions set up, and have the duration of those various positions inversely proportional to the desirability.

This is not a new idea for him, and it is an excellent one. A win-win situation.

But I thought he wasn't specific? All words and no substance? Sounds like something real to me. Of course I'm sure Hillary thought of it first.

Wow- you know I'd put your name forth as a running-mate for him... great supporting details!

Uh, y'all do realize, don't you, that this is NOT a new idea? There have been programs since the Clinton Administration that offer student loan forgiveness for community service and working in poor, rural, and underserved areas. Loan forgiveness is preferable to flat-out giving students the money, which they could spend on other things besides education expenses.

Yes, but it is more extensive.

I've gone through the financial aid process myself and with my wife, and it's pretty obvious that there are ways of doling out the funds other than just cutting a check to students. Vouchers they can take to the financial aid office, for example.

He said that on the last CNN debate with Hillary. And I agree with you. Wonderful!
