It really is much, much, much, much, much, much worse than I thought.
Except he didn't refer to it later as an important amendment...but as a political movement...which I found rather odd...

Donald Trump debate: What did '2nd Amendment people' mean? - CNNPolitics.com

"This is a political movement. This is a strong political movement, the Second Amendment," Trump said to Fox News' Sean Hannity.

It's obvious based on his clarification when he said "Although the Second Amendment people, maybe there is, I don't know" that he wasn't referring to the Amendment itself.

This is what I believe too. It can be taken as what the media is lying about if you don't watch the entire rally.

The problem is when you constantly spew insinuating, inflammatory things...it becomes very hard to distinguish what should be taken seriously and what shouldn't.

It's not hard at all to distinguish if you look at the full clip IMO.

That said Trump is now in the position where his media narrative is "Trump is a nut who says crazy offensive things" so now most stories about him will be filtered through that lens. At one point he played right into that narrative and this is the downside of not stopping it when he could.

Just like Clinton has to watch out for anything that plays into the "Clinton is a lying liar who lies" narrative. She's an old pro though, she knows how to avoid feeding into it and how to counter it when it pops up despite her best efforts. Trump not so much.

These people are having a fit but while they are having a fit they are pointing out which candidate has their backs for the second amendment and which one doesn't.

Go Trump Go

But, a public call for assassination? Really???!!! You have to be pretty far out there to get that from what he said. The way he talks is not how typical politicians these days speak and a lot of people can't handle it but they cannot block it out. So just twist it into something terrible because you don't like it. If people have to have their hand held by lying politicians who barely speak off written scripts, maybe they should question that as false security.

Context matters.

There is a history of references being made to "Second Amendment remedies" and so-called joke hunting permits to shoot liberals and similar. This wasn't some random comment out of the blue that got taken the wrong way, it was an obvious dogwhistle to things that have been said by NRA supporters nuts before.

Exactly my point. Trump has made the bed and now he needs to lie in it. Hillary is savvy enough to dance. Trump just runs into it head on over and over and over again.

I'm pretty sure absolutely no one was swayed one way or the other in terms of voting. People who feel strongly about the 2A debate were already pretty much locked in. It may weigh on the minds of some independents...but then the rhetoric he spews is as much of a turn off for them as any of his flip-flopping positions on gun rights.

I don't necessarily think he was "calling for an assassination" but, his comments are not made in a vacuum. His little innuendos and jokes are designed to get a rise out of his base. Within the total context of political discourse his comment was deeper than what he said. See below...

Excellent points and basically Trump rhetoric 101. He uses innuendo and jokes as a cover to appeal to the bigotry and biases of his base supporters while not coming right out and saying it (most of the time). Reading between the lines for meaning and context requires more than just what he said in one speech.

Well, I wouldn't say that either. . Trump has in deed open mouth and insert foot!

Its funny no matter which candidate we have Mr. Trump or Ms .Clinton both of them can seem to stay out of trouble. Supporters on each side have to try mine the question "why".

Clinton is further deep in national security issue and her testimony.

This election season is like no other!
