A pro-Obama super PAC aired a TV ad indirectly alleging that Romney caused a woman’s death. Democrats accused him of animal cruelty over a decades-old story about Seamus, the family dog, forced to ride rooftop on a road trip. Vice President Joe Biden told a largely black audience that Romney and his running mate were “going to put y'all back in chains.”
All the while, Obama attacked Romney’s business record ruthlessly, as Democrats questioned whether Romney’s use of offshore accounts made him unpatriotic. Obama’s campaign even suggested Romney might have committed a felony by misrepresenting his employment status to federal regulators.
It is so sickening how the Democrats can lie like this.

The point is that Democrats are rewriting history, pretending that all they did four years ago was make the case as to why they thought Romney was wrong on the issues; in actuality, he was subjected to some of the nastiest attacks that I have ever seen.

To apply the label "less crappy than the setting-new-standards-for-crappiness Trump" doesn't conflict with any previous Democratic assessment of Mitt Romney.
Frankly, I thought Romney was the best (read: least bad) Republican nominee since George H.W. Bush (who Republicans of 2016 generally despise for his apostases - never really believing in certain long-disproven conservative dogmas, such as that supply-side nonsense). Romney was a manager, a problem-solver who obviously had no real commitment to right-wing ideology. I wouldn't have supported most of his policies, especially the bones he would have had to throw to the nutjobs, but he had the temperment to be President that McCain and Dole lacked, and unlike George W. Bush he wouldn't have been a spineless puppet of his Vice President.
But he wasn't nearly as good a choice as Obama, which is why - and this apparently comes as a shocker to you - Democrats didn't support him. It's not a matter of tunes being changed but just an observation that Romney was lousy but exponentially less lousy than Trump.
They mocked his religion, were outraged that he was a rich white guy (but then run HRC, a rich white woman 4 yrs later), and Harry Reid lying, claiming that Romney did not pay taxes for 10 yrs, mocked Anne Romney for her MS.
