A lot of money goes into the winner of these beauty contests. My son was in a relationship with a young woman who became Miss (State) and the pressure on her to maintain her physical appearance was intense. Sponsors provide the wardrobe and they don't want someone looking dumpy and frumpy in their clothes, nor do the ones running the program want people to wonder why the winner looks so out of shape.
It was a beauty contest, for pete's sake. Especially as a Miss Universe, supposedly the most beautiful woman on the planet. Anyone who gains 50 lbs isn't going to be able to look like she earned that claim.
That fact sails over their Lena Dunham loving heads.
