Will Trump's scorched earth campaign permanently damage the USA?

Permanently? Very doubtful. At most I suspect he may become a little footnote in history books, his whining and blather simply won't have much 'legs'.

We'll see what Congress does.

Clinton has some repairing of her own to do. Trump and his followers have trashed her pretty viciously.

Can't believe this thread is still alive after starting it back in mid October. Seems to me that there will be permanent changes to the GOP for sure. They will take the biggest hit, because they are going to be forced to distance themselves from the Radical wing that consolidated under Trump. Like amputating a couple of cancerous limbs.

Trump has called them out. Branded them as the traitors they are....
That is the generous interpretation. Government is often inept, occasionally corrupt, and always inefficient. But there are times when it is essential. There are situations when the best solution – or even the only solution – is a public-sector solution. As a nation, we need to realize that it is simply not the case, that big-bad-government is universally and incorrigibly the enemy. Until we do so, the big-picture items, such as entitlement-reform or response to climate-change, will remain festering and unattended.

The less generous interpretation is that the battle lines have been drawn. Upper-middle-class, well-educated people have completed their migration from the Republican to the Democratic parties. Poorly educated white people have completed the reverse migration. Once the Koch wing of the Republican party goes Democratic, and the Bernie wing of the Democratic party moves elsewhere (Social Democratic Party?), the transformation will be complete. But while that would sort out and disentangle alliances and allegiances, it would only cement disagreements in the national discourse. I foresee gridlock for far longer than merely the impending 4 years.
