Exactly. To put his reputation out there like that would be certain career suicide unless there's significant evidence to support the action that he took.
The DoJ actually told him that if he went to the media, he would violate their rules and he would be operating independently from the department. He said he was going to do it anyway out of fear of being accused of covering something up. He was basically afraid of the Congress.
Then why didn't get say so? If he was putting it out there due to transparency, or supplementing the record, then he should say he has significant evidence.
