NC has been regressing for years. McCrory deserves to lose. Now, the next thing is throw out the entire GOP state legislature and start over. The low-tax red states suck off the prosperous blue states and have been net takers of govt money for decades - typical GOP - they sure know how to steal other peoples' money. Lousy social safety nets, a joke of an unemployment benefit program (only 13 weeks), no healthcare for the poor, even defunding education, tax cuts for employers that don't create jobs. Yay.....now this needs to spread to all the other GOP governed states.
How silly. It's one of the fastest growing states in the USA and now in the top 10 in population. It will gain another electoral vote after the 2020 election.
Both political parties understand the importance of the state. The DNC held it's 2012 convention in NC, the 2014 Senate race was the most expensive one in US History, and Trump & Clinton fought a pitched battle for NC this year.
It takes a special brand of inept to lose as an R when Trump beat Clinton by 4%. Especially considering that Trump wasn't that popular. I have friends and family in several different parts of NC and visit yearly and he pretty much alienated everyone except hardcore Rs. And some of them weren't pleased with him either.
His other problem is he is recounting in frickin Durham which an absolute Dem stronghold. If anything the has the potential to kick in more D votes if provisional ballots are found to be valid.
As Waldo stated- NC is going to be the new battleground state. Its quasi southern but has been drawing huge numbers of transplants for the last 30 years so you have a really diverse mix of young, old, rural, urban, suburban, small town, mountain, coast, business, finance, manufacturing and military. I always liken it to Pennsylvania with more military and about 3-4% more Republican. When it gets that extra congressional district it will actually be on pretty equal keel with Ohio in terms of Electoral Votes and that should prove very interesting.
Mr. McCrory has refused to concede, and despite having no path to victory, he has been engaged in an all-out assault on the integrity of the election system. His fight appears likely to serve as rationale for a renewed effort in the legislature to make North Carolina’s voting laws and regulations even more onerous.
The McCrory campaign has alleged that his defeat resulted from “massive voter fraud,” an irresponsible claim for which there is no evidence. It challenged the eligibility of 43 voters, contending they were felons. A review of public records by Democracy North Carolina, a voting rights group, established that nearly half of those voters were not, in fact, ineligible.
The roughly 90,000 votes under scrutiny in Durham were added to the statewide tally around 11:30 p.m. on election night. McCrory, who is seeking a second term, appeared to be leading statewide until those votes were added to the total; Democrat Roy Cooper, North Carolina’s attorney general, has been leading in the count ever since.
For some reason, Durham County always seems to have issues with voting.
Of course the NY Times misses the real issue at hand. i.e. Durham County.
However IMO, Pat McCrory is going to lose. He alienated too much of his base with HB2 and the I-77 Toll Project.
I don't see that this is deserving of a recount reading through your article, they decided to go through the motions along party lines. Surprised it was this close with the damage done by McCrory.
