NELSONVILLE, Ohio (AP) - campaign_minute Democrat Barack Obama says he's tired of questions about his religion. The Democratic presidential candidate told a town hall meeting Sunday in Nelsonvile, Ohio, in the state's rural southeast, that he is a devout Christian who prays to Jesus every night. He told audience members they would feel right at home at his church in Chicago.
I'm glad that the mainstream media finally gave Senator Obama to respond to this issue. And not only did Senator Obama put the (rather offensive) question to rest, he also--finally--said what he should have been saying all along.
That he isn't a Muslim; that not only is he offended as a Christian by this so-called smear, but that it's offensive to Muslims (as if there's something wrong with being a Muslim).
His church is all about one race
if it were about the white race he would be held accountable
I could care less if he was poka dot one race is not over another one
everyone is soooooooooo afraid to talk about this
I ask why?????
LOL, I have a hard time believing that average folks in Ohio would feel "at home" at Obama's church. Its stated mission is to focus on African-Americans and their ancestral roots. That's fine, it's a free country, but to insist it's an average, mainstream Christian church that welcomes everyone equally just isn't true.
Exactly why didn't she say "and even if he were a Muslim, what exactly would be wrong with that?" Or something to that effect?
It's quite a sad commentary that people in this country equate every Muslim with terrorism. But standing by and letting it happen is just as bad. I'm with Montclair on this one. We seem to be digressing as a people when it comes to discussing religion.

Most churches are comprised of a single race. I grew up in the South. We had black baptist churches and white baptist churches. Didn't mean these churches were all about one race. People just tend to feel more comfortable worshiping with people similar to themselves. What makes me laugh is when people go on and on about Obama's "racist" church as they sit in their all-white churches.

Nothing exists in a vacuum. Ever been to Chicago's South Side? It's not as if the church bars white people from entering. While I've never been, myself, I know several white people who visited TUCC while doing some work on the South Side. One of my former coworkers (manager, actually) was a member there, and if he was a black nationalist, he certainly wasn't showing it (since all of his coworkers were white and hispanic, and as the manager he could have easily hired a black person over any of us if the particular applicant were more qualified.
Chicago, historically, is quite segregated in most areas. TUCC promotes a sort of afrocentric pride that is meant to build up the community in which it exists. The church does a lot of great work.

I'm passing no judgment on the church. If it fits the needs of its members, great. But I can't imagine that rural white Ohioans would be comfortable attending that church, which is what Obama is asserting. The fact that the church honored Louis Farrakhan would alone be a turn-off for most white folks.

You haven't been there and I have. Your stated beliefs are based on assumptions and mine are based on what I have witnessed. In fact the church does welcome people of all hues, per the articles by the white Protestants who have attended services there and the white members of the congregation.
You seem to believe the church honors Farrakhan every week or something. It just does not happen.
I just so happens that many whites do not feel at home in situations where they are in the minority, just like other folks. To say they are not welcome is inaccurate.
