The reporter asked if someone in Obama's campaign called the Canadian ambassador to warn them that what Obama was saying was just campaign rhetoric. The article clearly shows that did not happen. The account was derived from a short discussion during a tour of the Consulate in Chicago, where the adviser was asked to tour.
In a statement, the Canadian Embassy expressed regret on how the discussions have been interpreted. "In the recent report produced by the Consulate General in Chicago, there was no intention to convey, in any way, that Senator Obama and his campaign team were taking a different position in public from views expressed in private, including about NAFTA," the statement said.
