it seems to me that if unpopular bush endorses him that it would be easier to say "4 more years of the same failed administration"

I think neither. I can't imagine any republicans not voting for him over that. It's pretty clear McCain is his own man. He's been a fairly independent thinking senator for many years.

I don't think it's going to matter. Most moderate Democrats and Independents see McCain as his own man, not as Bush's poodle.

McCain is not Bush.

This doesn't matter. An expected endorsement from a Republican President on March 5th is going to mean very little come November.
