Further retreat into fantasyland -- it's all the ideologues have got left. This was of course a crushing defeat for the GOP and for broader right-wing populism in general. It was a worst-case scenario, far worse than what they had expected -- an uncomplicated proof that the bloom is off the rose. Trump himself already has the worst approval ratings in history, and a "We'll pass anything at this point!" GOP tax bill is apt only make matters worse. As time goes by, nothing good will come out of this Asian trip: US image will be worsened by it, but the trade deficit with China won't budge, and realization that Trump is nothing but a blustering fraud will only sink in deeper and deeper.

Governor's and mayor's offices, as well as county positions, went to democratic candidates. The Washington State Legislature is now completely controlled by democrats, as are those of the other two West Coast states.

The voters in suburban areas, which had fairly low turnouts in 2016, came out in large numbers, to overthrow those linked to Trump. This is not a brief flash of resistance, but the start of a major re-taking of territory. A hard lesson was learned, but it doesn't look like voter apathy will allow anyone to weasel into office by default, in the future.

it's news, it sells, like anything else, and I wouldn't count your chickens before they're hatched there Mr. McDonald....just saying...

lest we forget, they are playing victim to illegals so they get they're votes...but in the long run, this topic is not correct....actually, a little over the top.....and sure any state that is going to claim to be sanctuary are going to get the illegals out to vote.

It should be against the law for illegals to vote....and really an insult to the u.s.

It ALREADY IS against the law for illegals to vote in state and federal elections, which is most of the reason that they don't do that. In various municipalities where illegals have in fact been allowed to vote, they campaign and turn out just like native-borns.

Virginia's House of Delegates, which was described as being so heavily gerrymandered by the Republicans, that their majority there was "virtually unassailable", was almost taken over by many new democrats who were elected on Nov. 7th. If the Republican Majorities in some of those skewed districts wouldn't vote for candidates of their own party, that tells us something.
This is the key point that has the GOP so worried. They thought they had fixed those districts so that they couldn't lose them, and the fact that they did lose in so many of them means it's their own party who is voting against them now.

It will be very interesting to see where they go from here.

This has nothing to do with illegals. It has to do with the fact that they lost in their own gerrymandered districts. The Republicans rejected the Republican candidates and voted for the Democrats in large numbers. All your attempts at scapegoating are just because you don't want to see that truth.

What a surprise.

Not.

Just wait until the 2018 blowout.

Then I guess the D's will say, hey, it was just voters in blue states showing up to vote!

There is a little bit over blowing. But R's are going to struggle. D's struggled during Obama term even with very good approval rating. R's have president with low approval rating. If not in 2018, we will see a shift in 2020 towards D's.

Yes I read the article...winning local is nice but on the national scene no progress...Dems had a chance in Utah for a house seat but failed...if a Democrat wins Jeff Session's Senate seat in December then that's Huuuugee...let's see next month

Except for those who've enjoyed socializing and private visits with Trump in the Oval Office, private visits with Kushner and Trump's other close advisors, and doing (shady) business with Trump, Manafort, et al.

Perhaps Mr. BentBow would like to explain them to us. Of course, the above crew and their minions are not exactly classical Communists - they're oligarchs, out to benefit themselves without regard for anyone else, much less for democracy, and they've done just that quite consistently.

Until now. Thank you, Mr. Mueller.

Maybe so, but nationwide, Democrats have a long and tortuous path towards anything resembling parity at state and local levels. Until that happens, the electoral landscape will structurally favor Republicans.

Though I hope that you're right, it seems to me that celebration is premature. The country has been riled up into populist fervor, where the "other" and the "elite" haVE been tarred as the source of all evil. Rather than the traditional wedge-issues of God-guns-gays, we have the village-mindset vs. the global village. The latter has kept the peace for 70+ years, and has given us unprecedented prosperity. But now in the West, and particularly in America, too many people are restive, suspicious and miffed. Too many are enamored of a strongman-savior, whether in present guise, or something less odious. The present debate isn't about raising taxes or lowering taxes, tightening gun-laws or keeping them loose. It's about whether we're going to accept or reject a trans-national modernity, where ideas and products don't answer to flags or anthems or tribal parochialism. Well, are we? One off-year election isn't going to decide that.
