"A McCain campaign aide actively pushed an incendiary, racially-charged video that uses the controversial words of Barack Obama's pastor to tar Obama as unpatriotic -- despite the fact that McCain himself has suggested that Obama shouldn't be held accountable for Wright's views."
Maybe there is a chance for a somewhat civil campaign in the general election this fall?

MSNBC is reporting it as true. Not sure why the aide wouldn't be fired either, unless McCain is waiting to find out all the facts himself. You know, instead of jumping to conclusions, going off half-cocked, or letting his temper get the best of him. The last thing McCain could want is to be dragged into that cluster****.

Well, there are PLENTY of Republicans who would (and have) engaged in just that kind of attack. Just listen to right-wing talk radio or FOX news right now about the Wright issue - tons of such talk about it.
McCain, however has made it abundently clear - several times - that he will NOT put up with that, that's one of the many reasons I admire and respect the guy - as do many Democrats (including many members of Congress).
Even though I'm unlikely to vote for him (the Republicans have controlled things long enough in my opinion) I like the guy - even when I don't agree with him.

I think McCain is just laying low to avoid being wrapped up in a fight he has no stake in. A lot like a domestic dispute, you take the side of one and both jump you. You know, the "Nobody hits my husband but me!" perspective.
If he were to defend Obama, Hillary jumps him as a racist and if attacks Obama he becomes a hate monger himself for attacking a black candidate. Why draw fire if he can stand outside and let it consume the Dems alone?
I am sure he suspended his aide for exposing him to the risk of being associated with the fight more than anything else. We are not talking about his personal convictions here, it is more about political savvy than standing up for a conviction.
