33 I believe. This could be an evergreen thread. And this guy also chaired a committee.

Yes, it's mostly committee chairs who are dropping like flies. There are no term limits to run for Congress, but their chairmenships are term limited to 6 years and that's apparently at least part of the reason some aren't bothering to run again, they won't be able to be chair of their committee anymore.

Look, it doesn't have to mean that new conservatives can't run. While we are concerned about the House, there are plenty of conservatives in many places who could step up and try to get in.

Of course it doesn't mean that new conservatives can't run. But running for an open seat is not the same thing as running as an incumbent. And this was already considered a competitive seat even with an incumbent running. None of that guarantees a Democratic pick up but it certainly doesn't hurt their chances.

how is this news

all 435 seats are up for grabs

it is also the significantly oldest house

the average age of a Representative is 57.8 (the oldest in history), many even older, all should be thinking about retirement...he average age of the Democratic House leadership is 72 years old

think about it...old crab Pelosi should IN NO WAY, be looking for re-election at 77
conyers is 87
young (R), AR..83
Johnson 81
roybal 75
seranno 73
O'Halleran (D) 72
Grijalva 70
Garamendi 72
Matsui 74
Cook 75
Lee 72
Eshoo 76
Lofgren 71
Napolitano 82
Waters 80
Lowenthal 77
Rohrabacher 71
Larson 70
DeLauro 74
Lawson 70
Posey 71
Hastings 82
Frederica Wilson 76
Bishop 71
John Lewis 78
David Scott 73
Peter King 78
Jerrold Nadler 71
Carolyn Maloney 72
Eliot Engel 71
Nita Lowey 81
Louise Slaughter 89
Eddie Johnson 83

and many more, but I am tired of look up ages...

But the Trump University graduates said that the GOP was going to finish picking up seats in the midterms and only increase their leads, become a super majority. Trumps tide was supposed to lift all GOP boats to victory in '18. So why is it record number of GOP incumbents are retiring, what has got them so scared?

It couldn't be the signs of the ....

NOOOOO! That's just all fantasy in the land of Liberal Make-believe, right?!

Yes of course all seats are up for reelection. But if you aren't aware that an incumbent running had a 97% success rate in 2016, then you don't know much about politics and elections. The fact that so many GOP seats will now be open seats doesn't guarantee the seat will switch parties, but it absolutely changes the odds.

yes inc has a 97% success rate....

I was alluding to the fact that this is the oldest house in history

and you have reps (from both parties) that are very senior...not only in years in, but in actual age

for example Louise Slaughter is a democrat..not saying anything bad about her... but she will turn 89 in august...she is running again....been in congress since the 80's

but at 89, its time to retire....she IS THE OLDEST...followed by Feinstein....

I would rather have someone of 30 years in service retire honorably , than to die in office

and the ages, especially for the incumbents who are re-running but are in their 80's.. the odds change there too

Majority of Americans See Congress as Out of Touch, Corrupt
out of touch, too old, not representing their people

The most recent blow to those hoping to climb the ranks? Dianne Feinstein, 84, the oldest senator currently serving in the chamber, just announced a bid for re-election to the seat she's held for two and a half decades
yes 30+ republicans had said they wont run again...some of them (like the idiot in PA) for very good reasons...in the civilian sector they would have been fired for abuses while in a leadership position...and there are nearly 30 democrats that are way too old, and are making the younger democrats disheartened

Except that's a 2015 poll, and all of those incumbents were reelected the following year. When people answer those kinds of polls, what they really mean is they don't like YOUR guy/gal, but THEIR guy/gal is ok.

But I don't disagree with you about fresh blood. I would also prefer to not have a bunch of 70-somethings running for President in 2020 - on both sides.
