Paul Ryan isn't running for re-election is 2018, is he? He's likely to step back from the US House per many articles. He never denies the rumors and has sidestepped discussions about re-election.

Candidate filing deadline in WI is June 1, 2018. Primary is Aug 14, 2018.

Yup.
He never wanted the job in the first place. Folks have forgotten the Republicans had to plead with him twice before he took it.

Ryan was the Republican's last forlorn hope when he grudgingly accepted to become the Speaker of the House. While it seems an eternity ago, it only happened in October, 2015.

Ryan knew the job was going to be thankless, and that he would be regularly beaten up by his own people, and sure enough, he was.

He knew there was going to be nothing meaningful that would ever come to his desk to pass onto the Senate, and sure enough, there was nothing.

He knew he would go down in history as one of the architects of disaster, and that's going to happen eventually.

Given all that, who would want to run again, just to get another 2 years of the same?

Paul Ryan. Possibly. Or not. Possibly. He has said nothing either way. All he ever wanted was to be a Representative, but look now at what he got by allowing his arm to be twisted.

He allowed it once, so he may allow it again. Some guys discover they like pain. But most don't.

Paul Ryan will likely choose not to run this time. It's easier to walk away now versus losing. There's a strong D candidate Randy Bryce running in Ryan's district and he's a military veteran and blue collar iron worker with a lot of charisma.

Ryan will probably get some lucrative jobs (corporate board member, etc) that aren't as brutal on his reputation and he won't have to spend as much time in DC, away from his family. If Trump resigns or is impeached, maybe Pence hires Ryan to his cabinet.

If he does pull out, he will leave Congress without having accomplished his number one goal, one that is near and dear to his heart, which is dismantling Social Security and Medicare. The poor guy has been itching to do that since he first got to Washington.

Of course, I'm sure that's what he'll spend all his remaining time and effort on for the next nine months. He went to college on Social Security benefits he received after his father died, and now his fondest wish is to be able to pull up the ladder behind him, because he got his, the hell with everyone else. Which seems to be the Republican's motto.
