The economy had been poor under Carter, and had started to boom late in Reagan's first term. People were tired of a decade of 'stagflation' and believed that Reagan was better on economics. GDP growth was 4.6% in 1983, and 7.2% in 1984. It was a time of tremendous entrepeneurship.
I believe a large part of that was due to the Baby Boomers getting older, and thus into their more productive years. The first baby boomers turned 38 in 1984, and the youngest were 20 in 1984. This meant a much more productive work force than we had in the 1970's under Carter.
The oldest finished high school in 1964 which means they came from a much higher percentage of 2 parent families than the following generations.
