Without interference from Debbie Blabbermouth-Schultz and others Bernie may have won the Democratic nomination in '16 but he would have gotten trounced by Trump. There are too many Americans alive today that vote on a regular basis and know what a terrible system socialism is that Sanders would not have gotten elected. The Democrat Party has gone so far to the left they are chasing their own base away. Pretty bad when Pelosi & Schumer look like moderates in comparison to the new bloods in their party.
This time around Sanders wont come close to winning the nomination. Kamala Harris, I believe, will come closer to winning but I think another candidate will rise to the top to win the nomination. I do see her as a potential VP selection to get the female and people of color votes. (How controversial of me to say, I know.) Until we know the full field it's impossible to speculate which one that will be. And no, it wont be Cory Booker.
I don't think your suggestion of VP strategy is controversial. Trump selected Pence to placate the Christian Right, Obama needed Biden's experience & moderation to balance his lack of it, Bush 2 needed Cheney's credibility with Conservatives and Clinton needed to double down on youth/Southerness/moderation with Gore. The VP slot on the winning ticket has been a strategic decision for every winning president since Kennedy except possibly Nixon and Carter.
What will really kill Sanders 2.0 is that he will not receive the entire protest vote as he did with Clinton. He will also loses progressives of several stripes to Warren and possibly Brown and O'Rourke. Couple that with a lot of Dems willingness to forgo ideological purity in the name of electability and I think he will be whittled down to 20 something percent at best. And I do not see a single winning state for him in Iowa, NH, SC or Nevada. If he goes that long without a win I think all but the diehards will abandon him for a more viable candidate.
Who has been shut out, or was the a figment of your liberal/progressive made up imagination.
Do you read? The RNC has already stated their entire treasure trove will be reserved for Donald Trump and only Donald Trump. They aren't going to lift one finger for any primary challenger.

Joe Biden is going to announce in like 3 weeks.
Morning Consult has been doing huge polls(10,000 to 15,000 people)
Those polls have Biden beating Sanders in a 10 way race by 10+ points. the reason this matter so much is that to get delegates, you have to get over 15% and Sanders doesnt qualify in many of the polls, where as Biden does in all of them.
He's not a Democrat. Is he going to switch parties and become a Democrat?
he is running as a democrat and not an independent/socialist party candidate, according to the hill.
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) announced on Tuesday that he was jumping into the 2020 presidential race, putting to rest months of speculation over whether he would once again seek the Democratic nomination after an unsuccessful bid in 2016.
The fact that Bernie is old is a plus IMO. Young men get drunk on power and get distracted with sex (JFK, Bill Clinton etc.) I would prefer a President who is at least 65. I will take 80 or 85 over some 45 year old stud.
