Obama delegate quits over 'divisive' remark :: CHICAGO SUN-TIMES :: Barack Obama (http://www.suntimes.com/news/politics/obama/883120,CST-NWS-trustee08.article - broken link)

What did this woman do? She told some neighbor kids who happened to be black to stop playing in a tree like "monkeys" because she was afraid of them getting hurt. Obama's campaign apparently didn't want to be associated with this horrible "racist."

All I know is that I'm white and my parents called me a "monkey" all the time when I was a kid and would climb trees. That's the image that comes to mind when you see a kid of any color swinging from a tree. Do you think the term "monkey bars" is racist?

Yet this man supported Jeremiah Wright for 20+ years...

This is the type of thing that will cost Obama the presidency. I imagine McCains campaign carefully earmarking this for future ads......

That's completely ridiculous. I don't think that her remark was at all racist. Talk about overreacting on the part of the neighbors and the Obama campaign. My family loves monkeys. My neighbor (who is white) has a thing for sock monkeys. The Chinese have a favorite folk tale called The Stone Monkey. Japanese snow monkeys have white fur... I suppose that she should have compared those children to squirrels.

And kids should be careful when climbing and playing in trees. I bet that Linda Ramirez-Sliwinski is sorry that she cared about their safety and got involved. Let's all encourage our neighbors to get less involved with keeping our children safe.

Shades of the Howard Cosell contretemps. Sorry folks, the Obama campaign said (when she offered to leave) that the decision was up to her.

May we get back to campaign issues now?

I call my son a monkey all the time but he's white so I guess it's ok. WTF is wrong with people that every little word has to be analyzed for meaning. Obama might get the nomination but he won't be President. What an idiotic thing to do.

"Ben Labolt, a spokesman for the Obama campaign, says that, on Monday, Linda Ramirez-Sliwinski told the campaign she would step down as a delegate for the Senator at the Democratic National Convention.

That came after Carpentersville police issued Ramirez Sliwinski a $75 disorderly conduct ticket for calling some African-African neighborhood children "monkeys" as they were climbing a tree.

Carpentersville Mayor Bill Sarto says he talked with Ramirez Sliwinski today and she told him she has no intention of resigning as an Obama delegate.

Sliwinski has said her remark was in no way, intended to be a slur on blacks.

Mayor Sarto says the whole thing is a tempest in a teapot and the Obama campaign says it's her choice whether to remain as a delegate."

Ok, Manigault, defend his campaign. But what they tell us and what happened are almost certainly 2 different things or it wouldn't have made the news. And why was she cited at all? Another reason this country is going straight down the toilet. Those cops need something better to do. Give the country to Obama to run and it will only get worse. He is the most divisive candidate of the bunch.

I think that people are making too much of this. I don't believe it was a racial incident at all. As a matter of fact, I had the same opinion of the Howard Cosell 'little monkey' comment.

“A suburban Chicago delegate backing Sen. Barack Obama is now expected to keep her spot at this summer's Democratic National Convention, reversing an outcome the Illinois Democrat's campaign had reported a day earlier.

“Ms. Ramirez-Sliwinski is an elected delegate and we respect her decision to represent the campaign at the convention," Obama spokesman Ben LaBolt said in a statement.

On Tuesday, LaBolt had said the trustee in suburban Carpentersville had decided to step down after she used the word "monkeys" to describe two African American children.

“It is clear that the incident was a misunderstanding,” LaBolt said.
As an elected delegate, Ramirez-Sliwinski's decision is her own. Obama's campaign had been told on Monday that she planned to step down.”

This has nothing to do with defending the campaign, its about putting all the facts out there. Why was only one side of the story presented here? I'm sure just to put a negative light on the campaign.

I agree it seems like is was NBD to me and she shouldn't have been sighted. Maybe she wanted to step down because she thought it could be a problem for the campaign?

If all sides of a story are not told people tend to make up their own conclusions and run with it, which seems to happen a lot here.
