Have I stepped into a time warp into the 60s? Are we really still hemming and hollaring about Communists?
I personally hold a great deal of respect for Obama's mother. Glossed over or not, she accomplished more before she was 30 than most people do in their lifetimes.

hear hear !!!
i posted an article about BO's mother from spengler which says that she does find a lot wrong about america, because there is a lot wrong about america
This liberal "news article" on Yahoo news shows the biased media for Obama.
They forgot to mention she was involved in radical Communist groups. But to the liberal media who is in bed with Obama (literaly), these are just "annoying details"....
So Obama is involved in radical Communist groups because his mother was? Infallible logic my trolling friend.

Yeah, you would think that McCarthy himself was haunting some of these boards. Anything to put Obama down though, right? So sad that no one can ever find anything positive to say about anything. I think we should all try it. For instance, John McCain was hilarious on American Idol tonight. I think he's quite endearing.

Would you be complaining about a time warp if, instead of communism, we were talking about Naziism? Your comment demonstrates why the Democrat party went off the rails in the 1960's. Up through Kennedy and Johnson both Democrats and Republicans recognized the evil that communism is and that it had to be resisted, by force if necessary. Then along came the young "idealists" like Obama's mother and Hillary for whom the communists were the good guys. They're the ones you still see wearing the Che Guevera t-shirts. Well the "good guys" were responsible for hundreds of millions of deaths in the 20th century. They made Hitler look like a piker. Can you say Pol Pot? And yet people like yourself can pooh-pooh the inference that Obama, because of his upbringing, might have communist leanings. Where liberals see something innocuous, I see a red flag--literally.
Stanley Ann was a child of the 60's .. a free spirit of the time. It's too bad that she chose her own hubris over her son. It's a good thing her parents were responsible enough. Credit should be given to the Dunhams more than Stanley Ann. She bore him, that's about it. Not that she was a bad person, she just made choices that were unconventional. Barack is ok in spite of it.

This is more along the lines of my thoughts. I don't see her life as anything to look up to at all but it does seem that thanks to his grandparents he turned out ok. I don't look up to anyone who chooses to have a child and then run off to do their own thing without thinking of the child. People should have to take a test before having children!
I never said that this thread was created to extol the virtues of Obama's mother. I simply thought that it would give people a more thorough understanding of Obama as he is today. I commend his grandparents for taking him in and their stability probably also shaped who he is today. But I thought it was a touching story in some ways.
The thing is, it seems like everyone here has come to a consensus that leaving your child in a safe country with great schooling and opportunities while going off into war-ravaged, violent countries was a bad idea. Yet, if the story had talked about how much danger Obama was in as a child for living in these countries, you would have crucified his mother for putting him in danger.
And I don't know why you're questioning Obama's abilities and beliefs based on his mother's wanderlust and communist ties. Can't anything just be positive without being twisted into something else?

Well said. And very fortunately, my mother and the majority of the parents back then in the 60's were not free spirits and so irresponsible towards their children. Her story is a good case for planned parenthood and the use of birth control. I'm not suggesting that she shouldn't have had any children, but more that she should have waited until after she or her first husband had finished their schooling before starting to raise a family together. And it doesn't sound like Barack's father was all that keen on having a child while he was in college or grad school at Harvard.

What exactly was so special about her accomplishments before she reached the age of 30? Being a single mom? There are many of those around and fortunately she had her grandparents to pick up the slack of childcare. It seems to me that she didn't really come into her own until she divorced her second husband and finished grad school... but in doing so, she abandoned her role as Barack's mother.
