I did a "wait and see" in the beginning and read up on all of the candidates. I didn't decide to support Hillary until around January. I didn't think (and still don't) that Obama is ready to assume the highest office and think that if he is elected it will be another neophyte disaster in the White House.
I liked Edwards and didn't understand why his candidacy never caught on. Don't like Biden (who flip-flopped BIG TIME on the war -- he was once VERY outspoken as its biggest champion!) or Richardson because of his strident support for amnesty for illegals. Dodd, whom I met MANY years ago, was a blowhard Washington insider even back then and is WAY too "establishment Democrat" to get my support. LOL, he's right up there with Teddy No-Pants in my book.
So, I decided on Hillary. She's enough of a savvy politician to know how to get things done but is smart and open-minded enough to find different solutions for troubling problems. Also, she is more of a centrist than the rest of the gang and that's important to me. I am NOT a lefty. I think she would be able to work well with the Republicans.
Republicans hate Hillary and tried to run her husband out of the White House.
She has gained their respect as a senator. I've seen a number of them talking about how they work well with her -- ESPECIALLY after 9/11. She worked hard on First Responder legislation and such, which they respected.
