A new Pew poll (http://people-press.org/reports/display.php3?PageID=1317 - broken link) shows some interesting things among them:

Quote:
Since April, McCain has lost much of his advantage in opinions about which candidate is better able to make wise decisions about what to do in Iraq. Currently, 46% favor McCain while nearly as many (43%) favor Obama. In April, McCain held a 50%-38% lead on handling Iraq.
State of the nation

Satisfied-18% (a new low in the 20 years Pew has been polling)
Dissatisfied-76%

Better able to handle the economy

Obama-50%
McCain-36%

Interesting that only 18% are satisfied with the direction of the country. Frankly, I'm surprised it's that high, but there's a sucker born every minute.

Its only going to get worse for McCain when the democratic primaries end and the spotlight goes from Obama vs Hillary to Obama vs McCain. He has a lot to answer for.

Here; Let me post this conflicting poll from rasmussen on your thread;

Rasmussen Reports™: The most comprehensive public opinion coverage ever provided for a presidential election. (http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/issues2/articles/mccain_trusted_more_than_obama_on_economy_iraq_nat ional_security - broken link)

Thank 18Montclair for that.

Quote:
When it comes to the economy, 47% of voters trust John McCain more than Barack Obama. Obama is trusted more by 41%. The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey also found that, when it comes to the War in Iraq, McCain is trusted more by 49% of voters. Obama is preferred by 37%. McCain has an even larger edge—53% to 31%--on the broader topic of National Security. These results are little changed from a month ago.

Obama enjoys a 43% to 39% advantage when it comes to government ethics and reducing corruption. McCain has a 44% to 38% advantage on taxes.

Free thinkers that see among other things, our security, low unemployment and continued seven years of economic growth. . . and perhaps can still recall the misery years of the Carter term.

You neglected to include these little tidbits from the poll;

Quote:
Recent declines in Obama's image have been pronounced among whites - especially white women. Currently, just 43% of white women express a positive opinion of Obama, down from 56% in late February.

Favorable opinions of Obama among independent voters, who have provided him strong support in several of his primary election victories, also have declined over the course of the campaign. Obama's favorable ratings among this pivotal group have fallen from 62% in late February to just 49% in the current poll.
