Default McCain and Roe v. Wade

RealClearPolitics - Articles - Pro-Choice Democrats and John McCain

Quote:
In a 1999 interview with the San Francisco Chronicle editorial board, McCain said, "I would not support repeal of Roe v. Wade, which would then force X number of women in America" to undergo "illegal and dangerous operations."
I think McCain is a moderate on most issues including Roe v. Wade.

I think McCain was being disingenuous on the issue of abortion and the possible repeal of Roe v. Wade. If Roe v. Wade is overturned, the issue of abortion will go back to the states where it belongs. For McCain, or any politician, to attempt to scare women by saying that the repeal of Roe v. Wade will automatically lead to back-alley abortions is wrong. State legislatures would decide whether they want to make abortion illegal in their own state. Some states would have more restrictive laws while others would be more permissive when it comes to abortion.

Actually, it is Obama who is using the scare tactic on Roe v. Wade. McCain says he is Pro-Life. Obama says he needs to be the one to pick out the Supreme Court Judges. This is the latest Obama meme because he's trying to get the Hillary voters to vote for him.

But thanks for verifying what I already knew.

McCain is not moderate on this issue (There is already a large thread on this)

Sen. John McCain served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1983 to 1986 and in the U.S. Senate from 1987 to present. During his four years in the House, then-Rep. McCain cast 11 votes on abortion and other reproductive-rights issues. Ten of these votes were anti-choice. In the Senate, through 2006, Sen. McCain cast 117 votes on abortion and other reproductive-rights issues, 113 of which were anti-choice.

In addition to his solidly anti-choice record, Sen. McCain has never cosponsored or supported legislation that would prevent unintended pregnancy or reduce the need for abortion.

Senator John McCain (R-AZ)

Quote:
"If I am fortunate enough to be elected as the next President of the United States, I pledge to you to be a loyal and unswerving friend of the right to life movement."
[Statement by Sen. McCain read by Sen. Sam Brownback at the March for Life in Washington, DC, January 22, 2008. Statement by Senator John McCain on the 35th Anniversary of Roe vs. Wade - Catholic Online (accessed January 30, 2008.)]
Quote:
"I’m proud that we have Justice Alito and Roberts on the United States Supreme Court. I’m very proud to have played a very small role in making that happen." McCain explained further that he "will try to find clones of Alito and Roberts" to fill future court vacancies.
[Transcript, Republican Presidential Candidates Participate in a Debate, May 3, 2007, and Carl Tobias, On judges, don’t doubt McCain’s conservatism: He pledges to appoint clones of Alito and Roberts, Christian Science Monitor, February 11, 2008.]

Yeah, he also "says" he kept telling Bush to fire Rumsfeld. NOTE to trolls, he didn't say that, he kept saying; "it's the President's call to make", or words to that affect.

He said Bush's tax cuts were a terrible idea, bad for the economy, etc.

Now he says that to fail to extend them would be a tax increase.

He says that he said a lot of things. The problem is that he either didn't say them or after he said them he "got the call" from Robertson, Dobson and the rest of the puppeteers.

Roe v. Wade isn't going anywhere. (What's left of it anyway... it's pretty watered down).

Both Democrats and Republicans need it to fundraise and fearmonger.

Just look how Democrats are threatening women with it: "YOU NEVER EVER GONNA HAVE AN ABORTION EVER AGAIN IF YOU VOTE MCCAIN!"

The Republicans, of course, trounce it out to raise money and run on a "pro life" platform that never seems to advance.

Besides, the people of the US are pretty happy with the status quo overall. Look at what happened when South Dakota tried to go draconian. The people said, "uh uh, TOO FAR!"
