Hey, hope I am not off topic, but my mother and father were from War and Newhall, West Virginia and my brother was born in Cucumber? You all know these places? I remember walking out in the back yard as a kid and coming in covered in coal dust. My uncle was a professional moonshiner (lol).
I feel the same way. Where I live now is flat flat flat. No windy roads... Sometimes I look at cloud banks between trees that are different layers of color and PRETEND Im seeing a mountain range
My favorite mountains are - not the Blue Ridge, but the Alleghanies to the west of them in Va. What are yours? I also like the hills in eastern Ky but dont know what they're called. Dont care overmuch for the Smokies.
The end of the Appalachians (Mt. Cheaha, in NE AL) and the foothills in the Cumberland Plateau, in N Alabama and middle TN. I know, not real mountains, but still. The Chinese say "Every child has a lovely mother", and they mean that home is home, no matter how much anybody else might despise it.

No way man, jump into the hillbilly fray! I'm not very familiar with West V, besides my trips on the four wheeler trails. My uncle too made moonshine, but more because he was a drunk rather than selling it.

Yeah, my uncle loved to drink it, too. That's what killed him in the end. They found him hangin' out the window drunk and had a heart attack from it. I remember the Pop Stops 1 thru 5 and the Piggly Wigglys.

It is for this reason I think we're so divorced from the current political climate. I love my hills and all the people that live there, despite their "backwards, backwoods" nature. Neither McCain or Obama have a good grasp of our culture, but Obama will have a harder time here, I think. Anybody promising more government is going to have a hard time gaining traction here I think.

Agreed. I think that given the mistrust most Appalachians feel for celebrities, any candidate who hobnobs (?!) with them will share that low regard. McCain might also have a hard time winning them over, not b/c of his military service but b/c of his marital history. Neither guy has to wonder where to stow his halo, you know?

Least he went the way he wanted. My uncle sobered up, (much to my chagrin as a teen and early 20s) but he still makes the stuff, kinda like a connoisseur. Still doesn't pay the taxes because "taxes is fuh fools, boy."
Y'all should seriously read Rick Bragg's books, if you haven't already. You'd identify w/those folks. I know I do. Heh.
Will check that out. I've got the entire Foxfire collection and not a week goes by I don't dig into that! And you're right about neither candidate having to worry about where to place the halo. Obama's youth will cost him too. He will still win anyway though. McCain hasn't a snowballs chance, mainly because he has embraced the big government model himself.

Forgive me for asking what may be an obvious question, but I dont see how the federal government interferes especially with rural life. Other than allowing/disallowing farm subsidies and mineral rights, forestry/water and park decisions, and stationing Army recruiters. And partial source money for infrastructure repair. What am I forgetting -? Is it federal taxes?
