MONTREAT, N.C. - Billy Graham is as close to a religious icon in American politics as anyone, so it’s no surprise that a U.S. presidential candidate would seek his blessing.

On Sunday Republican John McCain did just that, essentially, traveling to the ailing evangelist’s mountaintop home to meet and pray with him and son Franklin, who heads the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.

Graham's son Franklin said McCain had been to see them but did not endorse McCain.

Weeks ago Franklin Graham came to meet with Obama at that evangelical pastors' meeting. They talked and shook hands - oh, Franklin, you blind young fool!

"A person who attended the meeting tells me that Obama and Graham discussed the situation in Darfur, Scripture, and Obama's Christian walk." - David Brody

"[Obama] came across as thoughtful and much more of a "centrist" than what I would have expected. He did not appear to be the crazy leftist that is being supported by George Soros and his radical leftist friends." - conservative Christian Publisher Stephen Strang, who attended the meeting.

(edit - I dont really know who David Brody is - a, or the, political commentator for CBN News - but he had a sensible, though timidly advanced, take on the Obama-Dobson dustup last week Obama's Challenge with Conservative Christians - The Brody File: David Brody Blog - CBN News and quotes, though doesn't discuss, Obama on pop culture messages Obama on Pop Culture - The Brody File: David Brody Blog - CBN News )

Well at least (so far) McCain has not tried the (proven false) Bush ploy of saying it was Graham who got him to be "born again".

Nothing wrong with either of them visiting them. I'd rather see him with the Grahams than the "Fallwell-Dobson etc" group of intolerant liars. I've always felt bad for Billy Graham since the Nixon tapes came out exposing his anti-Semitism. I don't recall his apology but I'm pretty sure he did.
