Sen. John McCain will get some battleground-state help this week from Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, who appear in a television commercial aimed at convincing the public that the United States is winning in Iraq.

Produced by Vets for Freedom, an organization of veterans of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, the ad will run in Michigan, New Mexico, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia, and on cable nationwide. The group, with about 20,000 members, will spend $1.5 million on what it calls the first of many spots during the next month.

Well that's good, but the money is wasted. It's over. Terrorism has been defeated. Maliki said it himself. We can come home now, right? Right?

Interesting.

An ad for Senator McCain from a guy using Senator Obama's Slogan....what will the public remember?

"The ad features eight veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan and the mother of a soldier in Iraq. "We changed strategy in Iraq," one of the soldiers says in the ad. "And the surge worked. Now that's change we can believe in. We need to finish the job. ... no matter who is president."
Hegseth said his group is not operating on behalf of McCain and notes that federal law prohibits the organization from coordinating the ad with the campaign. The states were chosen, he said, not because they are crucial swing states for McCain, but because the heightened interest in the election in those states will give it a larger audience."

GAO doesn't believe the surge has worked nor fulfilled it's intent. Of course Senator McCain would have us believe this is about force vs. diplomacy & diplomatic solutions.

They claim it reduced violence, but political issues are still not resolved. So, the surge did not accomplish but half of the goal.

Yep, and considering the reports concern regarding over 100,000 hostile troops, as well as infrastructure concerns, non-readiness of security forces, 4.5 million refugees, and our extended troops - we've got some major concerns beyond the usual propaganda. For those who say the surge is working, what the heck do with the problems that remain? The status quo is a short window, and we haven't accomplished much beyond force.

I'd also like to toss in Maliki's decisions to meet with Ahmadeninajad on the red carpet.

Seems someone knows who the regional superpower is. I like that Maliki is willing to talk to those he might have disagreements with.

Meanwhile, the folks speaking in the ad were actually on the ground there. The question is will the ad be effective, and having these folks speak up won't hurt.

I'd like to hear someone ask McCain, if the surge has worked so well, why aren't you talking about making preparations to come home?
