As you can see by the above blurb, Spanish speakers will continue to increase in the US as time goes by. What the blurb doesn't say, it that conversely, the number of English speakers will decrease as Spanish speakers increase. This increase in non-English speaking persons in the US will be driven by immigration (both legal and illegal) and by the disproportional large increase in the Latino/Hispanic population as compared to the traditionally English speaking population. Nobama is correct, our children will need to be conversant in the Spanish language if we don't want a situation of "reverse cultural isolation" to occur in the coming decades! Aprenda el Español y apréndalo bien! (Learn Spanish and learn it well!)
Are you including the 19,500 illegals from Mexico and South America? If so, I wouldn't count on that theory being gospel. The economy is tanking (self deportation) border patrol/deportation is increasing, and the American people are waking up. There will be even more of us phoning in our no (pathway to citizenship) amnesty votes to the senate and congress everytime Obama or McCain (whichever become POTUS) brings it up for a vote.

We've stopped it 3 times already.

The economy is cyclical and when it rebounds in the next 12-24 months, the illegals will be heading back to the US to their former jobs and occupying a street corner near to you! It will be like the swallows returning home to San Capistrano! Congress has a 9% approval rating , you've got a better chance buying ocean front property in Arizona than getting any kind of "immigration reform" from those a-holes! Besides, 90% plus of the incumbents will be re-elected and there is a wheelbarrow full of immigration laws on the books now that are partially or totally ignored! Can I interest you in 2 tickets to Nirvana, and I don't mean the music group!

if an immigrant has got a job making 6 bucks they will still make 6 bucks after learning english.the investment return is not immediate.

if they crossed the border yesterday, hey, they can get a couple valuable skills and learn english in the next couple years, as most do, and then 3 yrs later, they might be making 8 bucks an hour.

I dont care much about the topic of this thread so please dont respond by telling me that Im a McCain supporter because Im not.

My comment here though is that I think its perfectly reasonable for a man his age to change his mind. I know and have heard of plenty of older folks who change their minds on things late in life because they realize they are probably going to die soon and it forces them to look at many things differently.

why would you be angry at jobs requiring that you speak a certain language? I speak a couple of European languages and when I see an ad requiring German all I can say is "too bad i didnt want to learn German" and move on.

Except for Brazil ( where besides portuguese educated -which they dont consider you to be in latin america if you dont speak a foreign language-educated brazilians speak spanish or english or both)except for brazil, all other countries hablan espanol

Yes, but when the illegals learn English, they will be able to order in English at Burger King and know how much that 6 bucks will buy! Fries and a Coke with that Whopper order?

Actually, Guyana and Suriname speak Dutch and/or English, and French Guiana speaks French. Uruguay speaks a mix of Spanish and Brazilero. Portuguese is also spoken in the border countries of Brazil. Correction, Brazil is considered to be part of Latin America even though the national language is Portuguese. BTW, I've seen better written English by non-native English speakers. Perhaps you should consider taking classes in "English as a First Language"!

bk has made it easier, even for deaf , to just show nbr. of fingers for what you want. besides, in this case, they are customers, and it would be in bk interest to be able to make the sale.

i know this is going too far into the example, got your point, but still, mine still holds. No one will give them a extra dollar for being fluent in shakespeare and marlowe and reciting john milton backwards.

Yeah, well i warant trying to impress no one nohow with my manicured english, just so you know and feel like discussing milton and finnegans wake, not that youd know what that is, i m at your service. everyone gets their kicks where they can. i was aware of the guyanas, and you could have made the point that in the caribbean haiti speaks creole french as do many other countries, jamaica english, and so on. in uruguay is called quechua, and ive actually heard two people once conversing in quechua. what a treat!
