The New Yorker is a far left, liberal, publication and this cover was meant to be satirical and making fun of the Republicans and right wingers.
It backfired on them big time and rightly so. It is tasteless and most people who are only seeing the cover and don't know the background may even take it seriously. It was meant to be a caricature in the extreme.
But it's not about the intention, it's about the perception and this one failed miserably.
Not funny at all.

Foxxy Brown! That's the Black detective that I was thinking of from the 70's! I loved her hair, it had character and personality! It's unfortunate that no channel would re-run that series as it would be considered "stereotypical" by today's PC standards! Foxxy Brown was one cool lady!

Yo, the voice announcements at the Wal-Mart's in the Wilkes-Barre, PA area are bi-lingual! I hang around in Wal-Mart just to practice my Spanish speaking proficiency! Wal-Mart es muy bueno!

Jack they might sell a lot of magazines over this. It's the kind of childish imagery that the hannity crowd eats up.

How about all the horrible comic strips on Bush and Cheney. It's OK on them but not on Obama? Let's face it. It's all in poor taste but it's called free speech unless it's used on a Democrat (and by a liberal media source to boot).

Too sophisticated for the Neanderthals
This country is bottom heavy with Neanderthals who thought Bush deserved a second term, desire a third Bush term through McCain, and are obsessed with finding anything to knock the great Barack Obama. A picture like this, although a satire understood by those sophisticated, enlightened, intelligent enough to support Obama, is far over the heads of the Neanderthals. They will take it literally, what fools.
I think the New Yorker needs to understand that much of the country is not sophisticated enough to appreciate the satire, and many are stupid enough to believe that the pic is a real depiction of the Obamas. In this election year, I would say that this is poor timing. It doesn't take much to send the Neanderthals over the edge.
