SACRAMENTO -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, expressing frustration with lawmakers' failure to approve a state budget, ordered his administration Thursday to lay off thousands of part-time employees and moved to temporarily slash the pay of most full-time staff.

The governor, a Republican, apologized to state employees, many of whom, he acknowledged, are already struggling in a difficult economy. But he said he had no choice in the absence of a budget one month into the fiscal year.

"Our state faces a looming cash crisis," Schwarzenegger said.

Nearly 200,000 employees could have their pay cut to the federal minimum wage of $6.55 an hour, with full salary reimbursed once a budget is signed. More than 10,000 lost their jobs Thursday. Exceptions were made for those deemed too critical to let go for purposes of law enforcement, public health and safety or other crucial services
Wonder if Arnie is going to be paid minimum wage...oh, no, that's right...he's a Repub Elite so he probably won't have to..

So these folks didn't get their taxes raised...that outta help THEIR economy!!!!

Thank you! I was wondering when someone was going to mention this, I heard about this from a co-worker. I ask you, does he REALLY think people will go for that? HELL NO!!!!! He'll see some chaos going on before that ever gets implemented. What a foolhardy proposition.

if these people are worth anything, they will be paid. if they are really good, they can get a good job in the private sector. I have no problem with getting rid of government employees that aren't needed. if there is a need for them, then fine. but to have someone employed that doesn't serve a function? what's the point. what other organization actually separates employees into the categories of "essential" and "non-essential." if you are non-essential, then why do you have a job?

You could try reading the Op before commenting.

It didn't matter if these people were "worth anything"...they ALL will receive a pay cut...it's not based on "worth".

Essential : "law enforcement, public health and safety or other crucial services""

Non-essential: Obviously 10, 000 paper pushers who, also obviously, must've been serving a function.

The POINT is that yes, repubs won't raise taxes they'll just lower wages....how would that help the economy ???

Ya, I'm sure it was "Clinton's fault"!!!

I guess you just don't want Arnie to ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY for the mess HIS state is in.....just whine about it being somebody..anybody...else's fault....
