I think that a person who will capture the Clinton voters (a woman) would help the ticket greatly.

I think choosing a woman for that reason is not a good enough reason. Surely, you are not suggesting women vote for someone just because they are women.

Toss-up for me between economic credentials and choosing a VP with conservative values.

In the end, I chose conservative values. Right now not all are on his side, and he is doing well in the polls. If he gets his base behind him, it will be all over for obama.

I dont think conservative values are too important. The base will vote for McCain over Obama anyday. Independents, not the republican base, are going to decide the election.

He should pick Sen. Ted Stevens (R-AK).

In the choices, I put African American OR Women, not to have them combined. I dont think picking an African American would be smart for McCain. Obama has had African Americans wrapped around his little finger since he stood on the steps of the Illinois capital and announced he was running for president. I dont think anything will convince African Americans to change their vote from their beloved Obama.

It's the economy, stupid.

Hopefully also someone youthful, but with enough gravitas to act as commander-in-chief.

The rest, including "political outsider", is all red herring, but since red herring attracts votes, some combination of economic credentials and one or more of the red herrings is highly desirable.

At any rate, by these criteria, it appears Romney is on the short list, but I wish there were a better alternative, he appears a bit to "stiff".
