Cry me a river. Generations of people became literate reading and then studying by candlelight. John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Frederick Douglas. In this day and age if someone is illiterate it's because they're lazy. As for low incomes families I would suggest not having children unless you can support them. I wonder how many of those low income people have cell phones. 100% I'd estimate.
Out of your list, only ONE item is a responsibility of the federal government, national defense, the rest are state issues. So regardless as to how "expensive" it is, its only expensive if you refuse to find employment that offers medical.
Now this is a theme which keeps getting repeated here and really makes me question peoples ability to think clearly. So say I ditch the private jobs, which don't pay insurance, thereby withholding my skills and talent from the free market where they contribute to generating employment and profit, and take a job with the State, with benefits. Then some other poor hardworking person can take my jobs and not have insurance. That sure makes sense. Who the hell do you think will pay for their medical needs when they can no longer work due to illness, age related or other? THE STATE - ie taxpayers. So who here is the socialist?? Setting society up to pay for the needs of all those ageing uninsured isn't socialist? Give me a break!
BTW, my co-worker, who does "pay his own way" by buying private insurance for himself, his wife and one child, pays $700/month. And he is a smart guy without pre-existing conditions.

Oh thats just precious.. You would be witholding your talent from the free market, and you are keeping your job without benefits, so you can save someone else from having to do so.
