How can he betray a party he is not a member of? They lost his partisan vote when they did not back him. He is now I guess what we would call a rogue left of center voter.
His betrayal came about when he became Independent, he abandoned the Democratic party and began siding with the right.
That's plain and simple enough even for you to understand.
He is what some would call a RINO, but has the (I) label to appear inconspicuous, he's really a righty. We (democrats) were really surprized that he didn't go full right, which was probably a political blunder on his part. The democratic party distrusts him more than we know. Who is even sure the right can trust him?
He's a traitor to the Progressive Democrats and he must go!
What goes around, comes around. You may remember he had to run as an Independent because they threw their support to some millionaire with no political experience.

He didn't have to do anything, in fact in the vast majority of the country if you lose a Primary, you do not have the ability to run as an Independent.

He became Independent when the Democrat party refused to let him stay in the big tent. He ran as an Independent to keep his career in politics alive. He is identified as an Independent Democrat (ID-CT). (I know that is an oxymoron).
Is this plain and simple enough for even YOU to understand or should I attempt to break it down in even simplier terms?
During his re-election bid in 2006, he lost the Democratic Party primary election but won re-election in the general election as a third party candidate under the party label "Connecticut for Liberman." Lieberman has been officially listed in Senate records for the 110th and 111th as an "Independent Democrat".
