To the rich, jewlery is a type of investment. You simply can't apply the same rules to every day people and the rich.

I have asked a few times and never received a reply; How are 3 carat diamond earrings $280,000. My wife has 1 carat earrings and they cost less than 2k. Has anyone seen a jewelers appraisal on these earrings? It sounds like an insane number was pulled out of the hat for this one. I am no jewelry expert, but it sounds way off.

It depends on the clarity and cut of the diamond.

A totally clear diamond will be MUCH more money than an imperfect commercially available one.

The earrings were family heirlooms. They didn't "cost". They're "worth".

And as many know (including I, who don't own a diamond of any caliber), the carat weight is not the only aspect of a diamond that adds to its value.

In addition to cut and clarity, their rarity and/or antiquity may add to their value.

Lastly, in order to sensationalize the story, the writers may have even used the "insured value" which may or may not include sentimental value...who knows.

These may be near perfect 3 carat diamonds that cost almost 300k. If they are heirlooms then their worth is priceless.
