give me a break. you were a teacher yes? without the "oil companies" you are unemployed. the tax revenue taken in from exxon alone is enough to finance the precious department of education.
I assure you that the oil companies add nothing to my employment. The tax BREAKS given to Exxon and other oil companies are being made up for by the taxes paid by teachers and all other working Americans.
Who own's the oil companies? Would that be Americans, there pension funds, mutual funds, stocks I hope you get the picture now.
The oil companies are owned by multi national companies....many with little to no U.S. management. Yes, some stocks investment in these companies comes from U.S. citizens. But they sure are not making the big money from these companies. Do a little research.
yes, those pesky "tax breaks." I started a thread a while back how we should be thankful for the oil companies. instead of focusing so much on what you think they take, how about looking at what they give. but democrats can't do that. they want to take all of the oil companies money until all the exxon employees are living in ditches. no matter how much they give, it's never enough. democrats want more more more. gimmie, gimmie, gimmie. whose the greedy party? sounds to me like it's just as much if not more, the democrats. take a look at the oil companies profit margins before you whine next time.

Do you really believe this? Wow. How's the kool aid?
do I believe that the oil companies pay a lot in taxes? yes, it's pretty much common knowledge. how quaint of you to ask how the kool aid was. credibility -25 for kool aid comments. do you use words like neocon too? how about bumper stickers?

If you say the call to drill is a GOP gimmick, you need to call the cry for conservation a Democratic gimmick too. We need to increase supply (drill responsibly) and decrease demand (conserve). I think both sides are right and wrong on emphasizing only 1 part of the equation. That is why in this case, Friedman, who I think is a way better-than-average commentator, is wrong.
You just don't get it. We need to stop drilling as soon as possible. It's not about quantity; it's not about the economy; it's not about America's "strength." It's about ecological realities. You can't just keep extracting the "guts" of the planet--oil, natural gas, and water--and think that somehow this will have no effect on the planet's balance. Already, more and more scientists are getting nervous. The planet is a living organism, that has evolved over a long period of time into geological balance. It's not some object hanging in the sky, full of "stuff," that can just be taken until it runs dry. If it runs dry, we die. There is enough geothermal energy to fuel America for a thousand years. Free sun power, free wind power. But no: let's just keep destroying ecosystems and push the planet's balance over the edge. Why? Because that's what we know how to do. Because it's familiar. Because any plan for alternative energy is "weird" and "scary." The problem is that Americans have no ecological education. They just don't get it. And their children are going to pay a very high price for their fear and ignorance.

Tax breaks for oil companies are based on adding more ethanol etc to there mix.

Aren't teachers paid with tax money? So how are they making up the differance with the money they got from tax money they don't really earn?
It is naive to believe that drilling anywhere in the world will save the consumer money. If I as a jeweler get a bargain on diamonds do you think I really pass it on? NO I do the Capitalist thing and make as much as I can. Demand and supply will affect the price of gas more than anything. I got news for you, oil is a resource that is being consumed at massive rates and with the increase demand in China, India, Korea, and Russia the supply will only run out faster. If our drilling helped why do we ship the Alaskan Oil to Japan?
From an economic stand point it makes more sense to use up the worlds supply of oil and then us our own to supply our needs. Imagine what our oil would be worth? we would be selling it to the saudis to run theirr rolls royces and ferraris at $15,000 a barrel.
The only thing that makes sense is to be free of the old fuel mentality. invest in solar, wind and water powers. Nuclear is a disaster for $19B you can equip every home a nuke would power with solar and wind in half the time and have no waste that will last 250,000 years. - if you look over the last 4000 years no one country has maintained power how do we think we can control waste for a period 1000 times longer than our country has been around?
Consumers would be so much better off to create ways to be free from the grid and remove one of the many fingers government has in our lives.
Renewables are the way, but not the way T Boone plans, it needs to be at the household level no utility companies. I for one like the idea of generating my own power needs... then if I switch to an electric car.... no oil to be burned for fuel.
Here is the expected oil production in the off limits Artic areas compared to US demand going forward.
Keep in mind US demand is only 20% of World demand and all US oil production is sold in the "World Market". So raise the blue demand portion of the graph by 5 fold if you want a true picture of what pissant Anwar will do....nothing.
If you can't read this and know why drilling is just a stupid right wing talking point...... There is no hope for you.
It's like saying throwing a cup of wine in your swimming pool will turn the water red.....That's how stupid this "drill in Anwar" argument is.
