A new poll has some interesting findings. It says that basically about 20% of Democrats may be racist but that even some of the racist may vote for Obama anyway.
But as I look deeper at the poll, I wonder what they define as racist. For example, if somebody asked me if I felt that blacks as a group- especially males- were more likely to be violent and less likely to do well in school, I too would have said yes. Because that is the truth and not because I am "racist". The fact is that I think most Americans- except the redneck trailer trash- have the ability to separate individual blacks from blacks as a group.
I think this is true even of many Republicans even though racism runs rampant in that party. I think that, if the poll asked them something like "do you think Colon Powell or Condi Rice are violent or do less well in school?" even many- if not most- Republicans would answer no.
Add to that the fact that Obama is 1/2 white and racism should play less of a role than the poll seems to indicate.
