The same calculation Obama uses to show McCain votes with Bush 90 percent of the time shows Obama votes with Democrats 97 percent of the time and the research scientist at the University of Maryland who writes about it in The Philadelphia Inquirer says most of those votes are procedural.
His research comes from a right leaning source, a left leaning source and a non-partisan source. He says the left leaning source says McCain voted liberally 24 percent of the time, two times more than the average Republican.
His point is that Obama shouldn't be pointing the finger at McCain because the same calculation applied to himself would show he's worse than McCain when it comes to being a change agent (if you are going to include procedural votes).
McCain a Bush clone? These numbers dispute that | Philadelphia Inquirer | 09/19/2008 (http://www.philly.com/inquirer/opinion/28646754.html - broken link)

You are missing the point. McCain says the country is screwed up and he wants change yet his voting record shows he is 90+% with Bush.
It's not "being a change agent" that's important, it's that McCain aligned himself with Bush's horrible policies and is now trying to distance himself from that fact. Sounds like a distraction device to me.
sanrene, Bernie Sanders is the most liberal partisan back in the Senate.
The point is, that Democrats, such as Bill Clinton, had our economy running fine. People had much fewer complaints about government during his Presidency.
Voting with Democrats, generally, did not cause major problems for the country.
Bill Clinton, even during the scandal, never polled as low as our sitting President.
Voting with this administration is so horrible because the policies of this administration are so abysmal. If this President has a 30% confidence level by the public, a guy like
McCain is NOT calling our attention to the fact that McSame voted with Bush 95% of the time.
McCain admits he knows nothing of economics, same as Bush. Look at where that got us? And who is bailing these leeches out? The American taxpayer, offering Socialism for big business. Who will bail out the people? Why do the bailouts go one way? Up?
Now GM and American auto makers also have their hands out.
They promise to meet the government's standards of 35mpg by 2010.
The Prius is doing better than that now.
They promise the Chevy Volt, with only a 40 mile drive before recharging.
The entire management team of American auto makers must be fired before we can even consider helping them. It is their poor decision policies that caused the problem they are now in.
The only way they started building halfway decent cars is because of Japanese competition, and they still are not as good.
Instead of building cars to be the best for the consumer, they build large vehicles that offer the most return for the companies. That return was not funneled back into the business, or they would have their new line of hybrid and electric vehicles. No, no aid to American auto manufacturers.

McCain may have voted "liberally 24 percent of the time" if you go back to 2001 and average those early years in, but that man no longer exists. In his thirst to get the GOP nomination, he has been reborn as McSame..a man who voted with Bush 95% of the time in 2007 and 100% of the time so far this year.
The point is, that Democrats, such as Bill Clinton, had our economy running fine. People had much fewer complaints about government during his Presidency.
Come on, first 9-11, now the financial crisis, we're only beginning to see what was truly going in during the Clinton era...God only knows what's next...
