The Republican rejection of the most recent bailout plan is a political strategy pure and simple. It's what McCain instinctively went for last week, for himself. If the strategy works it may put McCain in the White House and keep the Repug seats in November - based entirely on games-playing. The recent McCain strategy writ horrifyingly large. It's a gamble with your employer's business and your kids' food - and it all depends on your gullibility. Here's how they are working it.

By rejecting the most recent (Republican-crafted) version, the "rebellious Republicans" (what a hideous image) have wrested the Fed's and Treasury's attention to themselves - the ball is in their court. Now, it's exclusively their decision on which the fate of the world hinges. Whatever the Fed and the Treasury Department come up with and present, now it must be tailored to please the RRs. Thus when the RRs finally do approve a version, no matter how slightly "improved," the choice to "save the world" will appear to have been theirs. They will trumpet the YES bloc as a victory they won for the taxpayer. See? These guys are playing with your and your kids' lives, for themselves. (Among the NO and YES-voting Republicans, check whose seats are being contested in November.)

It's pretty smart, but it's horribly cynical - and it still could blow up in their faces. The Democrats could turn the tables and reject that bill, but time is short and the entire world's credit system is running on faith. Or voters could see through this and turn against them because they see through the game and resent their children and grandchildren being put at risk for the sake of some fat guys' jobs.

Keep in mind that no matter what the Republicans do finally deign to pass, we are still facing about ten years of no growth or tiny growth. Your job is still in jeopardy. Your kids may still go hungry. And no matter what version finally passes, you are still paying for a bailout.

Just watch and see if this isnt the way it works - and all the while be asking yourself, how naive am I, really?

I think it is pretty clear that there is no republican leadership. The president pushes the plan, McCain takes credit for the plan passing the house BEFORE the vote and republicans in the house spit in both their faces.

After years of ignoring what their constituents want, they now want to pretend that they hear all the voices from 'Main Street' - sure they hear them, they are all up for (re)election. It is politics, pure and simple.

I bet none of these people are losing any money, they had 'insider' information, they knew what to buy, sell and move before the 'crisis' hit.

You are absolutely right: there is no short term solution to any of this. It didn't happen overnight and it isn't going to be fixed overnight. Anyone who thinks that taxes and unemployment numbers won't go up, regardless of who is elected, is completely delusional.

HEH ! ! ! Apparently there's as much Republican leadership as there is Democratic leadership. I believe it was Mdme. Speaker's own spit that blew back.

Five senior Dem Leadership vote NO. Twelve Dems on Rep. Frank's own committee voted NO. Even Dennis Kucinich voted NO.

Leadership? Judging from the criticism leveled at Bush for the last seven years from the left, I could convince myself that the Republican leadership in the House finally exercised the judgment it's been lacking for ten years and properly exercised that judgment.

I think you give them WAY too much credit. This is a wall street money grab, they have GWB's balls in a fist, and the congress can't do a thing because they can't figure out which way the wind is blowing.
