I think what got to him was the fact that Palin thought she held the market because she was a woman and had children. That is why he reacted the way he did.
Partly right. What got to him was Palin's obvious connection with average folks while Biden had spoken as a policy wonk all night. He needed something to turn the audience in his favor. IMO.
People are different and show their emotions in different ways I don't care how many years it has been.
Lets imagine that Biden is that sort of man (who's that emotional, and cries in public). Why would he bring up such an issue in front of the camera knowing full well that he is going to cry? That would be a complete lack of judgement, or a planned event.
