You really should go ask them since they are your exposure to the term

If it'll make you feel better, you can always call him an Uncle Tom and then contact your friends to see if you were right.

I can't recall ever hearing one black person say that obamma is an uncle tom, and I'm black.

Most blacks are proud of the accomplishments of friends and family, although others may be jealous, that's a very small minority.
