i absolutely would have liked mccain's plan better. the stock market is not the only place to invest money and people would not be locked into the stock market with their retirement funds like they are now if the government had allowed more choices.

yes, thanks for asking. I'd rather leave my children the 60% left from the stock market, (as if the stock market is the ONLY choice for your retirment fund, please), then 0% back if I die at 50..

p.s. the 20% decline, and the 40% decline didnt happen until the government, went socialism... So keep repeating this all you want, all it does is show that when socialism takes place, people will lose money!!

What's that old saying? 'Everytime you point a finger at someone, there are three more fingers pointing back at you...'

"The lobbying firm of the man Republicans say John McCain has chosen to begin planning a presidential transition earned more than a quarter of a million dollars this year representing Freddie Mac, one of the companies McCain blames for the nation's financial crisis."

I don't know what his plan specific plan is for privatizing SS, but if the money had been invested somewhere, instead of spent, at least there would be a "there" there, instead of the money having been dumped into the ozone.

Excellent point.. I'd rather have 60% of it in my retirement account then no where, which is where it now.

I'd love for it to be privatized. And my 401k hasn't tanked. Some people are smart enough to move money when they see trouble coming, which is what I did and haven't lost a dime.

If the govt had my money, I would not have had that option.

So YES, PRIVATIZE IT!

I guess you guys don't believe in social security's generational contract that links us all together; your grandparents, your mom and dad, your kids and yes, other people's families, too. It's an unselfish system that has benefitted millions and given the non-working elderly a dignified retirement instead of poverty at the end of their working lives.
And, one never knows when a crisis will strike and find one's life's savings' wiped out....... I bet there're lots of folks out there now saying, thank God for social security.

Exactly, it's a well run program with low overhead. It's not meant as a retirement plan but a safety net for the poorest elderly.

It's not bankrupt. It's flush with funding, and has a small managable long term deficit.

From the 2008 SS Trustee report.

2008 Trustees Report: Section II.E, Conclusion

Got that? If we do nothing, it pays full benefits till 2041 after that benefits must be reduced 22%. Again, " if we do nothing about the small long term deficit".

Yes, lots of folks out there saying, "thank god for social security", the tend to be those who did not invest. So those who are responsible, (as always) and want to get the government out of it are not thanking god for social security, those who are not, are thanking god for "social security" along with all of the other welfare programs out there..

p.s. When did I sign that "generational contract" to be linked to ANYONE?
