Oddly enough, a couple weeks/months ago, I was discussing how one-sided the campaign signs were in a neighborhood I was driving around in (Westmoreland/Eastmoreland-ish). Here on CD, I and another poster commented how we'd be afraid to put up a sign that differed from the dominating opinion. I don't remember who the other poster was, but s/he mentioned something about worrying the sign would be vandalized.
Sure enough, over the weekend I saw on the news that two fellas decided to firebomb a McCain sign in someone's yard. I'm sure all kind of nonsensical shenanigans happen during election season, with folks stealing signs of the party/candidate with which they disagree, but this is certainly pretty extreme.
It really doesn't surprise me that it happened. Just look at things generally speaking. Do you see hoards of unruly Republicans out picketing every time a Democrat comes to town to fundraise or speak? But name me an event featuring a Republican who didn't have unruly picketers.
While I know it's not true of every Democrat, I certainly have to admit that angry picketing seems to be a given.
I don't want to anger you Shaft, because I know you're a bad mutha and I can dig it, but really, who cares about one campaign sign. Get over it and quit trying to play the victim. It doesn't matter whose side your on, stuff like this will happen. I'm curious, have you ever publically expressed your distaste for bombing people, or is it just the "firebombing" of a Mccain sign that gets your goat. Priorities brother, peace out

I think John's post is the most profound of all the ones I've seen in the Portland Forum so far. Your comment of who cares about one campaign sign says it all.

You missed the point of his post. I think he was comparing the outrage of firebombing a McCain yard sign with the lack of outrage of bombing tens of thousands of innocent people in Iraq and Afghanistan. Yard sign is not ≥ human lives. Where's the outrage there? Nowhere. Because our govt. can do no wrong.
Anyways..... that's what I figured he was getting at.
No, you are all (intentionally?) misinterpreting what I said. My intent was to point out that such an activity occurred in Portland, the mecca of all things "tolerant" and home to all-embracing diversity. I was pointing out that an area that purports to be about political freedom and enfranchisement for all has followers who will readily adhere to such scare tactics to try to silence the opposition.
Mainly, it's to point out the hypocrisy of the elite socialists that dominate the city. But who cares about one campaign sign--because it's the "bad guy's" sign. By the way, the sign was only about 10 feet from the house. But it was a Republican sign, and they need to be silenced in the interest of inclusion and tolerance. Typical.
(Looks like this thread was moved from the Portland forum to the election forum. That's the moderator's decision, but my intent was a commentary on Portland rather than the election.)

It was moved because the moderators of the PDX forum, just like the city officials there are liberals. Liberals must stomp out any speech that is not their own. Must.
Is it true that Portland went 84% for Kerry in 04? I kind of find it frightening to live anywhere where any candidate from any party carries that kind of support, unless the candidate grew up there. Probably partly explains why I don't live in Utah or DC. Where can a good moderate/independent live where exposure to ridiculous partisan propaganda is minimal?
