Not that I've lost my mom, but at her 80th birthday celebration last month, it turns out that all my siblings and in-laws (to my surprise since half of them are registered republicans) are voting for Obama. The only person over 18 there who is voting for McCain is my mom. She felt VERY outnumbered. Since it was her birthday, we didn't dwell on the topic for long and we have a tacit agreement to disagree.
On the friends side of things, an aquaintance and coworker of mine sent a group email to a number of people's home email addresses. This email used offensive language to describe Obama, including the N word. I was astounded that she would send the email at all, and especially to people whose political persuasions were unknown to her, and most of all, to our boss. I have no idea if there have been any repurcussions at work since we work on different days. I requested that I be removed from her group email list.
Well, if your Mom relies on Medicare she might just change her vote too. McCain wants to cut Medicare and Medicaid by 20%. Seniors are already hurting and if anything their benefit needs to be better, not be cut!
My parents, who have been life-long republicans because of the (in my opinion, false) assumption that the republican party is the more "Christian" party, are voting for Obama based on personal conviction about their own party, wanting to end the war, and wanting a calm leader instead of a hot-head (that is their stated reasons - I'm not trying to start a badmouthing CD argument). But honestly that was a shocker when I found out last week ... but it is good, because that is who I'm voting for. Unfortunately, in Alabama, they prettymuch feel that they are alone in their neighborhood/church on the election and would be looked down on if they let others know they were voting for Obama. I don't think most southern methodists understand that Jesus had definite socialist leanings and/or was not a white conservative.
Meanwhile, most of my Dad's side of the family (who are mainly independent-christian friendly folks w/ liberal leanings) is voting for Obama. Most of my mom's side of the family (mainly uber-christian friendly folks, but a tad racist although not totally racist) is voting for McCain.
My friends are polar. Many are staunch McCain and many are stauch Obama. No middle ground. I still love both sets, but I did have to get into a civilized discussion with one friend for sending out derogatory group emails about Obama.
My husband says he is sure that his family feels I have brain washed him
Since half of them are racist and half Evangelicals I think that it is just fine.
It is my husband that continues to bring up politics in front of them. It was clear to me where they would stand without ever saying a word, they would have had no idea on my views if he hadn't said anything.
I can't tolerate any sort of conversation that has anything to do with religion, politics or race with that bunch!

The trustees found that our obligations to future retirees are unfunded by a staggering $62 trillion. Add that to an earlier estimate of unfunded liabilities for the Social Security pension system, and the figure rises to $72 trillion," Sen. Joe Lieberman, D-Conn., said in a recent Financial Times editorial. "It is hard for most people to grasp those astronomical figures," he wrote. "They far exceed the entire net worth of the United States. But, as a nation, we must urgently grasp them -- and act. Americans cannot afford to ignore this reality. Each year that we do nothing, this 'entitlement gap' will grow by $2 trillion."

My boyfriend and I have had a few fights because we were both trying to change eachother's minds. I'm a staunch McCain/Palin supporter while he is fiscally Libertarian and morally liberal. We tend to yell at eachother when we watch certain news programs that are blatantly biased towards each candidate. Although we do debate, it usually ends up too heated to continue it and has somewhat hurt our relationship.
To be tolerant of something you have to be the establishment.
You have a fundamental misunderstanding of the term tolerance.
Quote:
Atheism is hardly the establishment. It's not tolerant of atheist when they feel everything related to go d should be removed from society. However it is being very intolerant of the establishment.
Show any evidence whatsoever that atheists support "everything related to go d should be removed from society."
Hint: you won't be able to. Most all atheists support the separation of church and state and object to government support of religion. Any religion. Our founding fathers agree with that viewpoint, btw.

You make it very clear in your last statement. Don't mind throwing crap out about how fake god is but can't stand to see anyone try and tell someone else about religion and what it means to them. (maybe not you in particular but definitely the majority of atheist)
How open are you to hearing about the all wonderful aspects of religious faiths you don't accept? How frightened are you by their threats of eternal torment for not buying into their story? Do you relish the opportunity to hear about Islam? Buddhism? Hinduism? B'hai? When you understand why you don't accept any of those faiths, you'll understand why I don't accept yours.
We atheists aren't going around insisting that religious folks abandon their faith. We're not burning down your churches. We aren't blocking access to your houses of worship. We aren't campaigning to ban the Bible. We just don't want religion (of any brand name) injected into our constitutionally secular government.
The message is clear: Your religion is OK. Enjoy it. Just keep it to yourself.
I backed Ron Paul in the primaries while family backed Hillary. I had talk with them trying to get them to back Paul but it didn't work, no arguments or anything of the sort. Now we all are backing Obama.

Fair enough?
You just don't want to hear anything about it. Is that your tolerant stance? You can have Marxist/Communist organizations in school but can't talk about god in any form. Not teach about god....just talk about him. That's silly in a country where 85% of the people believe in a higher power but because of the wants of a select few. Trust me I was in school when they made us stop saying one nation under god I fully understand how destructive it is. How many successful societies restricted religion?

It's hard to understand why the most prevalent religion must have boundaries in a society. But it's the religion that the majority of people prescribe to that is most at risk of overwhelming all other religions. If that happened, and there were only one religion, it would be a contradiction of the entire idea of freedom of religion. Freedom of speech doesn't mean much if there isn't an exchange of a multitude of ideas, and freedom of religion doesn't mean much if there isn't a multitude of beliefs. So even though it doesn't seem fair, it is exactly the dominant religions/churches that end up fighting restrictions, but those restrictions aren't to quell religious freedom, they are to protect it.
