I'm worried about the financial solvency of this country and the fact that we're piling up unprecedented debt that our children will have to shoulder.

Obama and an entirely Democratic government will make this sooo much worse. We got a glimpse at what would come when the Dems tried to add a whole bunch of goodies onto the bailout bill, including money for ACORN! My God, if not one of the branches of government believes in fiscal conservatism, we are totally screwed.
If you actually care about the solvency of our country, then Obama would be your better bet. An analysis by the non-partisan Tax Policy Center showed the McCain plan would add 1.5 trillion dollars more to the deficit than Obama.

Tax plans differ in those who benefit

And recent history would belie your assumption that a democratic government would make this any worse. By far, the biggest increases in our deficit have occured under Republican presidents. It barely increased under Carter, skyrocketed under Reagan/Bush, decreased under Clinton, and then doubled under Bush II. I don't see how one can proclaim to care about our national debt and then pull the lever for a Republican - especially one who's plan has been shown to be worse than the democratic counterpart.

Just throwing that out there.

I am leaning towards McCain but that greed in me wants to take Obama's handouts and run with it.
But if I were to base it on experience, accomplishments and track record, McCain wins.
Obama's track record on handouts are to his special interests only and Obama does not have a track record of useful accomplishments.

The thing about McCain is, he's obsolete. He's a relic from the Ronald Reagan days of conservatism.

His foreign policy views are a throwback to the days of the Cold War. Wanting to agitate relations with Russia and China? Does he really think nations with such nationalistic and ambitious leans are going to be intimidated by his "tough talk" stance?

In McCain's day, less taxes and less government intervention= better economy. That may have held true for decades, but Americans witnessed the meltdown of that laissez-faire policy pretty dramatically the last year.

He doesn't represent the America that is grappling with the erosion of its influence in the 21st century, he's a dinosaur from another time. And I don't mean age-wise either.

Fareed Zakaria puts it best:

Quote:
To watch McCain address the current economic crisis is to see a man out of step with his time. His responses have been a recitation of old slogans—cut taxes, limit the government, cut spending—that are largely irrelevant to today's problems. Does anyone really believe that tackling earmarks will get credit markets functioning? In some ways, McCain's intellectual fatigue reflects the exhaustion of the ideological revolution begun by Reagan and Thatcher. The country needs fresh thinking that is ready to accept new facts and new ideas. It's a new world out there.
The man hits the issue dead on. Conservatism as seen by John McCain is dead and withered. We need a president who is willing to shock Americans out of our complacency and indifference to national and world affairs.

Right. I've read many articles. What they fail to take into account is all of Obama's increased spending on his proposed programs. The honest analyses will state that. The two candidates made how they feel about spending quite clear -- Obama said he'd take a "scalpel" to the fed. budget and McCain said he'd use a hatchet and THEN a scalpel, except for SSA, Medicare and veterans.

Millions of dedicated U.S. Armed Forces have given their lives in many wars defending our God-given right to freedom and democracy. The office of President offers unimaginable challenges. Did anyone imagine 9/11 during the '04 elections? Likewise, will the next President face a strange new world. When a problem can not be foreseen, one needs to rely on the character, discernment and life experience of the, to be, President. The ways we judge those qualities is by past behavior, their ethical foundation, and those who they chose to associate with (show me your friends and I will show you your future).

Views on abortion, global warming or cooling, wealth redistribution, and so on are all important in a regular world...this is not a regular world!

Thoughtfully consider each candidates experiences, associates and behaviors.

Who best do we trust to manage the precious lives of our troops?

Who best do we trust to honor the Constitution of the United States of America and understand it in the way the founders intended, as evidenced in their other documents?

Who best do we believe will lead this Nation in a continuation of its historical foundations as the most vibrant culture in the history of the world?

Who best do we trust to discern the environmental data in regards to global warming and balance the judgment with real world economics and investment?

Do wisdom and youth agree?

I'll tell you all flat out that my vote is not going to be for what I feel is the best candidate but so much more so what I feel is the lesser of two evils.
