The Repub party has moved so far from the core ideology of their party. That's why they're getting spanked now. Bush put the final nail in the coffin. So they either take this four years to regroup and get back to that Reagan approach that won so many Democrats, or they take a nice little 8 year vacation.

In the meantime, they could be enough supporters that still believe the government doesn't need to coddle them from cradle to grave joining a third party of some sort.
Cobolt, others, and the columnist at Fox News all got it right; the GOP has moved so far from its roots that they are strangers.
I've said it for years, the GOP was hi-jacked by the evango-fascist wing. Bush, Rove, DeLay, et al, pandered to them (to their face) for votes & money, but when their back was turned, the Bushies referred to Dobson, et al, as "useful idiots."
The hi-jacking of the GOP by religious fundamentalists is NO different than the hi-jacking of the Koran by Islamic fundamentalists and used for dictatorial purposes in Afghanistan and Iran.
Only when the GOP kicks out the evango-fascists, and gets back to basic Goldwater-style Libertarian roots (which includes being pro-choice) will the GOP have a shot at rebuilding its brand for future elections.
If the current GOP is so concerned about "life" issues (i.e., anti-abortion) then its embrace of "life" should include healthcare since healthcare is essential to life itself. The bi-furcation of their message is insane; it makes NO sense to be "pro" life before birth but once born, to tell the population: F-U pal, You're On Your Own (aka the YOYO principal).
What most of the yahoo's espousing current GOP wingnut doctrine don't know is that Barry Goldwater, the father of the modern conservative movement, was PROUD that his wife worked for Planned Parenthood (PP). No GOP'er could even consider working for PP in this era of culture wars, which is largely defined as along pro vs anti abortion stances. It seems a few decades ago the anti-abortion forces simply went from congressional office to congressional office looking for support, and the GOP, hopeful to find an issue that would give them a leg up on the DEMs, glommed onto this issue so they could glom onto a bloc of voters. The "bloc" has fractured and those days are over with this election.

I agree with you 100%. Most Reps do NOT like the way the GOP has morphed. The Chrisitian, religious right is NOT representative of core, GOP values, at least not the Goldwater-Reagan era. This is what many don't understand. This whole fear mongering, hate speech, radical acting lot is so far from core GOP ideology. I was watching an interview on PBS with a former member of Reagan's administration (I forget her name), and the issue was actually about immigration. She stated this very thing, about the GOP morphing into something vastly warped, and I believe Newt has been saying the same thing. Until they "get it" they'll continue to lose.
actually, this is not unusual from Fox. Its only people who haven't kept up with fox and rely on left blogs that hate fox for their opinions.
Libertarians like this writer are 1,000x more conservative than yourself.
