Many years ago when I was a child my father said, "See the man laying in the gutter; he's drunk. Tomorrow he will shave, shower and put on a clean white shirt and tie and wear a clean suit.. No one will remember he was a drunk in a gutter laying in his own puke the night before." And for the next forty plus years I listened to my Republican father and Democrat mother needle and knoodel each other over the latest political offering. I learned to ignore the noise and listen to my victorian grandmothers who believed in truth, hard work, honesty, education and honor. Of course then, which was a long time ago, a man's handshake was as good as his X on a contract and mom still made everything we ate from scratch.
My, my, my how times have changed. The media now indulges in smear campaigns for no other reason than to attract advertising and increase ratings.
I'm not my mother or my my father. I am a different breed of cat. I'm an indy, moderaterly conservative, while senior, Repli-crat who is sick at heart over the state of our once pround country. I'm looking to elect a healer who can bring black, white, brown, red, yellow, old, young, gay and the forgotten together. I'm looking to elect an American with morals. Gen. Wesley Clark stated, "No Senator is ready to be President in time of war... because they have not run a campaign from the ground during a war."
I'm tired of the labels and racist remarks. I'm tired of the cable and radio talking heads that will gladly lead sheep to slaughter while they play to the court of public opinion for money. I'm tired of the outright lies and false accusations that are being hurled at the candidates. More than anything I am tired of the lectures about family values by people who have none.
I think we should be very careful of who we vote for because we might get it. I don't want to be forced out of my church because someone else doesn't like it. I don't want to be labled because of something I did or did not do when I was a child. I don't want my family to be a sacrificial lamb because *they* don't understand I did not chose my parents nor did I chose where I went to school before I reached college age.
It does not make any difference to me that McCain has been a Bush supporter for years. I don't care how many times he voted for or against something or if he didn't vote. Most politicians do the same thing and they all have their reasons. I do care when he calls his opponent "that one". I do care that he does not understand the economy. I do care that he did not show good judgement when he applied for a marriage license while he was still living at home with his wife. I do care that he picked a young female running mate that supports the radical notion that Alaska should be allowed to withdraw from the United States; I don't want to see another Civil War. I am deeply concerned McCain has PTSD like many of my friends his age who served in the same war. True, McCain didn't see the faces of the enemy he killed, but he was their prisoner long enough to be badly affected by the experience. Will I vote for him? I don't know.
I do not care to what or to whom these candidates worship. Religion and sex are private matters that should remain private. Should it matter to anyone if McCain worships at a Native American church? If not, why should it matter that Obama worships at a Church of Christ? Rev. Wright you say. Then maybe something negative or misunderstaood by the media your preacher said when you were not in church should be hung on you for the rest of your life and the life of your children too. The sword of injustice swings both ways.
Little things mean a lot. I do not like negative campaign ads. I do not care who does it, who says it, or who supports it. The ads are devisive, mean spirited and they are not helpful. The DNC and RNC are as wrong in encouraging it and they are when they engage in any form of it.
I like Obama for a number of reasons. He is a gentleman like my father. He held Hillary's chair for her. Obama shook McCain's hand after he said terrible things about him. Obama and his wife stayed for nearly an hour after one of the debates and greeted the public; it was unexpected.. McCain and his wife left. Unlike McCain, Obama did not have a father who was a Navy officer. His parents did not send him to college. He graduated with honors and it wasn't that long ago that he and his wife paid off their college loans. Obama did not marry the heiress to a large fortune; he married a lawyer. More imporantly, Obama does not have three decades of Washington pals to rely on. Biden does. Sure he does, but he also "serves at the pleasure of the president" which means that Obama can send Biden on a very long, very boring mission to Timbuktu. Will I vote for Obama?
i don't know. I still have not decided who can best unite our racially, divided, politically bankrupt, financially adrift country. The most interesting thing I heard lately is that Gallup took a poll between May and September in every country abroad and asked residents who they would vote for. The only two countries that were soundly behind McCaine were the Phillipines and Georgia (not the state). The poll numbers were interesting. 38% for Obama and 8% for McCain. Maybe they know something I do not.
No offense, but this is Illinois. Your vote doesn't matter, Obama is taking the state.
Because it has been that way historically speaking. The eternal optimist might say, if enough people get up on election day and are able to get their heads out of their a$$es this could all turn out very differently.

I like Obama for many reasons (his stand on issues), but I also would like the next president to be from Illinois. If nothing else, it's a matter of state pride.

There will be nothing to be proud about if he gets elected and ends up doing a horrible job.
