If I were the site owner, I'd do a mass LOCK of all the threads and lock this sub-forum too.

Whether or not they want to start a new sub-forum for the transition period is anyone's guess. Perhaps one titled "National Politics" is appropriate, to keep it separate from "other controversies." State politics could/should be kept in state forums.
