Please be specific in telling us EXACTLY in what way "things resemble the 1850s." I will be waiting.
The bitter division with nearly 50 percent on each side, growing violence, numbers of people who feel the government no longer represents them, belief that a candidate represents a serious threat to one side's lifestyle, etc. Hey high ranking officials in Montana were even openly suggesting secession earlier this year.

That pretty well describes every election since 1990. The neo cons began their effort to divide and conquer and have pretty well kept us at one another's throats since them. So how is this year any different. I think that once Obama is elected and the neo cons are history, we will begin healing as a nation and get on with the things we need to accomplish as a nation. While we have been kept divided by the haters, the country has gone downhill because we can't work together enough to accomplish anything. The majority of the country is tired of watching our country washed away by the hatred the neo con has engendered. They did it to take over power and maintain power but the people are ready to take their power back.

You are too brainwashed by two party politics to see the picture.
FiveThirtyEight.com: Electoral Projections Done Right: McCain Miami Rally, Getting Ugly Down Here
After the rally, we witnessed a near-street riot involving the exiting McCain crowd and two Cuban-American Obama supporters. Tony Garcia, 63, and Raul Sorando, 31, were suddenly surrounded by an angry mob. There is a moment in a crowd when something goes from mere yelling to a feeling of danger, and that's what we witnessed. As photographers and police raced to the scene, the crowd elevated from stable to fast-moving scrum, and the two men were surrounded on all sides as we raced to the circle.
"People were screaming 'Terrorist!' 'Communist!' 'Socialist!'" Sorando said when we caught up with him. "I had a guy tell me he was gonna kill me."
Asked what had precipitated the event, "We were just chanting 'Obama!' and holding our signs. That was it. And the crowd suddenly got crazy."
Sarah the Storm trooper is what America needs?
I voted early lots of Mccain supporters and Obama supporters and nothing but harmony.
That isolated case you speak of if it actually even happened is just that an isolated case and again I wonder if it happened at all

People on these boards post of growing violence, etc and I don't see it .
Yes if you watch MSNBC or Fox news its doomsday but in the real world it is far from that.
Lots people voting more than ever for both camps and perhaps an isolated case here or there and again perhaps as I suspect must is wishful thinking from Obama/Mccain camp to paint the other side as bullies.

State seems real split right now between Obama and McCain. Maybe you can have Obama Nation in one half Palin Town in the other. She and her husband are into secessionist movements and she has little interest in the long term value of McCain. RealClearPolitics - Election 2008 - Montana: McCain vs. Obama
RCP Average 10/01 - 10/25 -- 47.8 44.4 McCain +3.4

Dumb, dumb post.
You could say that over 1/2 of americans hate McCain for his ideas that are basically 4 more years of the most unpopular president in history (look at his recent voting record) and his hateful, divisive running mate. Yet, I would not even use that a reason if McCain was seriously injured or killed by an Obama or anti McCain supporter.
